Eagles Notes: Eagles put safety Wolff on injured reserve

The Eagles placed safety Earl Wolff on injured reserve with a knee injury Tuesday, ending a disappointing season for the 2013 fifth-round pick who has been affected by the injury since the summer. They signed cornerback Roc Carmichael to fill Wolff's roster spot.

Wolff, a healthy scratch for the last two games, was not listed on the injury report last week. But he suffered a right knee injury last season and dealt with problems again during training camp.

Wolff lost a competition with Nate Allen for a starting spot and has not played to his potential. That included a Nov. 2 start against the Houston Texans in Allen's absence.

"They want the Earl back that flies around, that has a 40-inch vertical," Wolff said. "They want me back right. . . . I've been pushing through it. But it didn't heal completely."

Wolff planned to meet with the medical staff Tuesday to determine the next course of action. He believes he still has a future with the team. He said general manager Howie Roseman told him the Eagles saw a difference between his film from 2013 and this year's, and Wolff agreed.

"Once we get this rest," Wolff said, "I'll get it back."

Carmichael, 26, played 13 games for the Eagles last season before he was cut in August. He was not signed by any team in the last 11 weeks. The Eagles left the door open for his return, so he was not surprised by the move.

"They . . . let me know that I did what I could here, I wasn't a negative guy in the locker room, everything was going the right way, it was just the business side of it," Carmichael said. "They said as soon as they got the opportunity to bring me back, they would."

The Eagles now have five cornerbacks, four safeties, and hybrid defensive back Jaylen Watkins, who has been getting work at safety. Chris Maragos and Chris Prosinski are the top backups at safety.

Tobin has concussion

Eagles guard Matt Tobin missed practice Tuesday because of a concussion suffered Sunday against the Packers, an NFL source said.

Tobin was spotted in the Eagles locker room after practice and was asked why he didn't participate, but he had no comment. An Eagles spokesman had no answer for Tobin's absence. The Eagles will have to list Tobin on Wednesday's league-mandated injury report.

NFL protocol for a head injury often requires the player not to attend practice. Tobin's status for Sunday against the Titans is uncertain.

Andrew Gardner filled in for Tobin at first-team right guard at practice. Gardner could split repetitions with Tobin when he returns.

Linebacker Mychal Kendricks also did not practice, but he indicated that he expects to return Wednesday. The Eagles do not release injury reports on Tuesdays.
