Eagles Notes: Chip Kelly stands by LeSean McCoy

One day after LeSean McCoy had his sixth game averaging fewer than 4 yards per carry this season, coach Chip Kelly supported his starting running back and said the Eagles are not looking to give Darren Sproles any of McCoy's carries.

One day after LeSean McCoy had his sixth game averaging fewer than 4 yards per carry this season, coach Chip Kelly supported his starting running back and said the Eagles are not looking to give Darren Sproles any of McCoy's carries.

"LeSean's our guy," Kelly said. "Right now, I think LeSean's doing a good job."

McCoy, the NFL's defending rushing champion, has 729 yards this season with 3.7 yards per carry. McCoy rushed 23 times for 88 yards Sunday in a 53-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers, who entered the game with the NFL's 30th-ranked rushing defense.

"A lot of runs he made, when you really watch them, I thought he did a good job of being patient, getting up inside, following blocks, and doing things on the outside," Kelly said. "I don't think LeSean played poorly."

Sproles is averaging 6.8 yards per carry. He carried the ball only six times during the last three games.

Foles' progress

Quarterback Nick Foles worked out before Sunday's game and is able to do cardiovascular training, but he is still a few weeks away from an X-ray to examine how his broken left collarbone is healing. The Eagles will not know Foles' long-term status until that evaluation.

"He worked out early at the hotel and did some running stuff in the fitness center early in the morning," Kelly said. "He'll continue to do those things to make sure that when he does get cleared, when the bone is healed, that he's not, 'Oh, now I need a couple of weeks to get in shape.' "

Marcus Smith sits

Linebacker Marcus Smith was active but did not play Sunday. It was the fifth time this season that the first-round pick did not enter a game. Smith, who moved from outside linebacker to inside linebacker, cannot even find a role on special teams.

"He needs to be more consistent from a practice standpoint to show the coaches that we have the trust in him to put him on the field," Kelly said.

No DEA visit

Drug Enforcement Administration agents did not conduct a surprise inspection of the Eagles' medical staff on Sunday in Green Bay, a team spokesman said. Other NFL teams such as the San Francisco 49ers were checked as part of a DEA investigation into prescription drug abuse around the NFL, according to the Washington Post. Kelly said he was not aware of the investigation.

"We lost; let's not pile on," he quipped.

Eagles food drive

The Eagles are hosting an online food drive throughout November to benefit the Coalition Against Hunger's Green Light Pantry program. The drive is hosted on yougivegoods.com. The goal is to reach 5,000 pounds of nutritious food.
