INDIANAPOLIS - Linebacker Marcus Smith was inactive for Monday's game against the Indianapolis Colts, making Smith the Eagles' first first-round pick to be a healthy scratch in his rookie season since Danny Watkins in 2011. Smith was active last week, but did not enter the game.

The Eagles have insisted on patience with Smith, although his absence Monday shows where he is in his development.

"He's close," defensive coordinator Bill Davis said last week. "Like most young guys, it's not easy breaking into the NFL starting lineup. You have to go through some very savvy vets that are holding on to those spots. Marcus is going to be challenged because he's got a good group in front of him."

Running back Chris Polk was active after missing all of the preseason and the season opener with a hamstring injury. He was used on special teams in the first half.

The Eagles' other inactives were quarterback Matt Barkley, wide receiver Josh Huff, defensive back Jaylen Watkins, offensive lineman Matt Tobin, offensive lineman Kevin Graf, and defensive end Taylor Hart.

Tobin and Huff were both declared out Saturday. Tobin has an ankle injury, while Huff has a shoulder injury.

Barkley, Watkins, and Hart were inactive last week. Graf was promoted from the practice squad this week after the injuries to Evan Mathis and Allen Barbre.

Offensive lineman Wade Smith was active for his Eagles debut. Emmanuel Acho was also active after being promoted from the practice squad.

Line shuffle

Dennis Kelly started at left guard and Gardner at right tackle for the Eagles. It was Kelly's first start since 2010, when he started 10 games. It was his first time starting at left guard.

Gardner started for the first time in his five-year career. He played 68 percent of the team's offensive snaps last week. There was some pressure from Gardner's side in the first half, although Nick Foles was not sacked.

Extra points

Linebacker Mychal Kendricks left the game with a calf injury and did not return. Casey Matthews replaced him. Cornerback Nolan Carroll left in the third quarter with an elbow injury. X-rays were negative and he returned.

The Colts started Penn State product A.Q. Shipley at center for the second consecutive week. Shipley spent 2010 on the Eagles' practice squad. . . . The Eagles will practice Tuesday, usually an off day.
