St. Louis quarterback Sam Bradford tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee for the second straight year and is out for the season, Rams coach Jeff Fisher confirmed Sunday night.

"We lost our quarterback," Fisher said. "For Sam, it was devastating."

Bradford was injured in the first quarter of Saturday night's 33-14 preseason victory at Cleveland. He was hit on his left side by Browns defensive end Armonty Bryant as he threw a pass.

Bradford, the first overall pick of the 2010 draft, missed the last nine games last season after he was injured at Carolina. Veteran Shaun Hill is the backup and the Rams also have rookie Garrett Gilbert and Austin Davis on the roster.

Bradford had 14 touchdown passes and four interceptions before tearing his ACL last season.

Newton fractures ribs

Quarterback Cam Newton will miss the Carolina Panthers' final preseason game after an MRI revealed a hairline fracture in his ribs.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Newton will be evaluated at the end of the week but expects the two-time Pro Bowl quarterback to be ready for Carolina's Sept. 7 regular-season opener against Tampa Bay.

Welker concussed

Broncos receiver Wes Welker suffered a concussion after taking a hit to the head from Houston defensive back D.J. Swearinger in a preseason game Saturday night.

Welker was leveled by Swearinger soon after catching a short pass over the middle with just seconds remaining in the second quarter. Swearinger drew an unnecessary roughness penalty for the hit on Welker, who has a history of concussions.

Marino returns

Dan Marino is returning to the Miami Dolphins as a newly hired special adviser to Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, a move that has been expected for some time.

Niners win first game

San Francisco's No. 1 offense still looks shaky two weeks from the regular season, and the host 49ers did just enough for their first preseason victory in a 21-7 win against the San Diego Chargers.

Phil Dawson kicked a 39-yard field goal in the second quarter, ending an eight-quarter scoreless drought for the 49ers.
