Eagles Notes: Lurie's glad he wound up buying the Birds

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Jeffrey Lurie purchased the Eagles 20 years ago after a failed attempt to buy the New England Patriots. Reflecting on that period at the Patriots' practice field Tuesday, the Eagles owner said he has not looked back and is grateful that an opportunity came up in Philadelphia.

"I sort of love the fact that I was able to buy a team where it was more urban because the Patriots were in Foxborough," Lurie said. "A fan base like the Eagles, one of the old-line franchises. I just never look back, ever, not for one second. This has been great."

Lurie wanted a team on a coast in a sports-crazed market where he would like to live because he did not want to be an absentee owner. Even though he grew up in Boston, he has not lived there for 30 years.

He said the two franchises have taken parallel trajectories during the last two decades. The difference, of course, is the three Super Bowls New England won during that span. But Lurie was adamant about how happy he is with the Eagles.

"It had to be someplace where the city was great like Philly," Lurie said. "It was really serendipity."

Injuries

Eagles cornerback Nolan Carroll remained sidelined with a hamstring injury Tuesday and said he was unsure whether he would play Friday in the preseason game against New England.

Before his injury, Carroll was making a strong push for playing time.

"I'm not satisfied, I'm not set on what I've done early," Carroll said. "I'm just frustrated I'm not out there."

Wide receiver Riley Cooper (foot) wore pads and was a partial participant in practice, but he did not take part in team drills. Jeff Maehl, who also missed Friday's game with a foot injury, played with the top unit in Cooper's place.

Running back Chris Polk and linebacker Jake Knott were the only two players sidelined. Both have hamstring injuries.

Back with the Pats

Safety Patrick Chung had a chance to reunite with former teammates at Patriots-Eagles workouts for the second straight preseason. He left the Patriots last season for Philadelphia, where he had one unspectacular campaign. Chung was released during the offseason and re-signed with the Patriots.

"Life doesn't go [the way you want], so you've got to keep working," Chung said. "I'm here where I want to be, working hard, just like everybody else."

Chung started 10 regular-season games and one playoff game for the Eagles last season. He dealt with a shoulder injury early in the year and lost playing time to Earl Wolff. He did not want to go into detail about his Eagles tenure.

"What I take [from Philadelphia] is there's been a bunch of good guys over there, they're very competitive, a good coach," Chung said.
