Westbrook salutes troops by playing in flag football challenge

WANT TO SEE Brian Westbrook in action again?

The former Eagles running back will be among the ex- NFL players and other celebs who will play in next month's "Tribute to Heroes" Flag Football Challenge at the Wells Fargo Center.

Westbrook will play for the NFL Stars alumni team that will take on the Wounded Warrior Amputees squad on Military Appreciation Night on Monday, July 7. The flag football tilt will begin at 6 p.m. and will be followed by the Soul vs. Orlando Predator's AFL game at 8.

The Wounded Warriors are comprised of veteran service members use prosthetic devices. Their mission is to raise support and awareness and, quite frankly, to give their opponents a beatdown.

The WWs are 7-0 against the NFL Alumni, including victories at the last three Super Bowls.

Among those joining Westbrook are former players A.J. Feeley, Vince Papale, Mike Mamula, Mike Mayock, Joe Pisarcik, Garry Cobb and Bill Bergey and ESPN football analyst Sal Paolantonio.

Soul owner Ron Jaworski will coach the NFL squad.

"I am truly honored and humbled," Westbrook said in a statement. "I hope every Eagles fan and every fan of the men and women in the United States Military will come out and see us play."

Jaworski said he is hoping to see the stands packed with fans.

"The entire night will be designed to honor the brave men and women who are or who have served our country and protected the freedom we enjoy and too often too many people take for granted every day," the former Eagles quarterback said. "It's important to show these heroes that we support them and that their sacrifices do not go unnoticed."
