Eagles Notes: McCoy, Cole escape serious injuries

After a pair of brief scares, the Eagles escaped Sunday's 24-16 win over the Washington Redskins without major injuries.

Running back LeSean McCoy and linebacker Trent Cole were taken to the locker room to be evaluated, but both returned to the game. Safety Patrick Chung briefly left the game, and quarterback Nick Foles played with a sore shoulder.

McCoy injured his right hamstring on a 16-yard rush in the second quarter. He fell to the ground untouched and immediately clutched the back of his leg. The medical staff went onto the field, and a nervous crowd chanted his nickname, "Shady," when McCoy returned to his feet.

McCoy described it as a "sharp pain" after his leg gave out. He said it might have been a cramp.

"It just grabbed really tight," McCoy said. "I was cutting and running, and it kind of just gave out. But I went back there and did some stretching and different treatment and I was back."

Cole collided with Chung while in coverage in the fourth quarter. He was evaluated for a concussion and cleared to return.

"I just got my brain switched around a little bit," Cole said.

Chung left with a throat injury in the first quarter. He also bit his tongue.

Foles said he "banged up" his shoulder on a hit in the second quarter. He spent the remainder of the drive winding his right arm between plays. It appeared that he was in discomfort, but Foles said he was doing it to keep his arm loose.

"I had a shoulder injury in high school, and I knew the key when you get banged up is to keep it warm," Foles said. ". . . I didn't want it to get tight."

Foles said he had no problem throwing the rest of the game.

Inside linebacker Mychal Kendricks missed his first game of the season with a knee injury. Najee Goode started in Kendricks' place and finished with five tackles and a sack.

Cornerback Bradley Fletcher's pectoral injury kept him sidelined for the second straight week. Roc Carmichael again started in Fletcher's place as the outside cornerback, with Brandon Boykin staying in the slot.

Safety Earl Wolff (knee) was declared out for the game, which is why Chung was in the starting lineup.

Brad Smith, who was signed Tuesday, played on special teams and offense. The team deactivated Damaris Johnson, who sat for the first time this season.

Quarterback Michael Vick was inactive as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. Linebacker Jake Knott sat for the fourth straight week with a hamstring injury.

Tackle Matt Tobin was active for the first time this season. Dennis Kelly remained inactive, as he has been throughout 2013.

McCoy moved past Duce Staley for No. 4 on the Eagles' all-time rushing list with 4,875 yards. . . . Cole's two sacks marked the 17th multi-sack game of his career and his first since Dec. 11, 2011.
