Eagles Notes: Did Eagles turn down Kaepernick deal?

The Eagles apparently had an opportunity to acquire San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in 2012, according to an ESPN report Sunday.

The top two decision-makers at the time, coach Andy Reid and general manager Howie Roseman, were asked about the report this week. Neither denied it, but neither confirmed it, either.

"Those questions you probably need to direct toward Howie," said Reid, who is now the Kansas City Chiefs coach. "His memory's way better than mine. I'm getting old."

When Roseman was asked about the report Monday on his weekly radio show on WIP-FM (94.1), the general manager eluded the question.

"When you're talking about players who are property of other teams or trade discussion of other teams in the league, you can't talk about that," Roseman said. "He's a talented player, a player we did a lot of work on coming out, and obviously doing a good job on the 49ers."

The report suggested that the Eagles turned down the deal, which would have been for a second-round pick, because they wanted to draft Russell Wilson. The Eagles had two second-round picks but did not take Wilson. They were interested in the Wisconsin quarterback, selected by Seattle in the third round, 13 picks before the Eagles made their selection. The Eagles chose Nick Foles with their third-round pick.

Quarterback Michael Vick said he was unaware of the Kaepernick report.

There were previous reports that Reid had been interested in acquiring Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith when Reid coached the Eagles. Smith, who is now Reid's starter in Kansas City, started ahead of Kaepernick last season before he suffered a concussion.

Smith said he did not know about the Eagles' interest at the time.

This is Chip Kelly's introduction to the NFL's short week, with a Sunday-Thursday turnaround. Kelly was forced to make an adjustment to his typical weekly schedule, which he has not been able to implement because the Eagles are playing their third game in 11 days.

"No one is out on the practice field training the day after a game, but we had to [Monday]," Kelly said. "Now we're trying to get into two-days-before-the-game mode.  Tomorrow is the day-before-the-game mode, and then we have to go play. We did adjust the schedule. But we knew it before the season started."

The coaching staff started working on the Chiefs game immediately after Sunday's loss to the Chargers. Kelly and Co. put the game plan in place late Sunday night.

Cornerback Brandon Hughes (hamstring) missed practice for the second consecutive day. Hughes is the only player who missed practice.
