Linebacker Victor Butler visits Eagles, leaves without a deal

Free agent linebacker Victor Butler visited with the Eagles on Tuesday but left without a contract. There was still mutual interest in getting a deal done, an NFL source said. But Butler has met with a number of other teams, including the Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers, and could be mulling over multiple offers.

Butler underwent a physical at the NovaCare Complex and met with Eagles coaches on Tuesday. The team is looking to add to its stable of pass-rushers. The 6-foot-2, 248-pound Butler would likely be used as a situational outside linebacker and special-teams contributor.

His addition wouldn't affect the status of either Trent Cole or Brandon Graham, according to a team source. But second-year defensive end Vinny Curry still has a way to go before he's assured of a roster spot.

Cole and Graham have played only as 4-3 defensive ends in the NFL, but the Eagles have said that they are confident both will be able to adjust if the defense were to switch to a 3-4 front. The Eagles did sign linebacker Connor Barwin, who has played in a 3-4 with Houston the last two seasons, away from the Texans two weeks ago.

Butler, 25, played in fewer than 30 percent of the snaps for the Cowboys defense last season but still recorded three sacks and forced two fumbles. He had 11 total sacks in four seasons in Dallas.
