For Eagles fans, this was the most anticipated Super Bowl since that game in Jacksonville.

Not because they cared who won, or because old buddy John Harbaugh was coaching against his big/little brother Jim, or because it meant the end of Ray Lewis.

No, Eagles fans were looking forward to Sunday's game because of Monday. With the miserable 2012 season finally completed, they can officially get on with 2013. And that means getting answers to some pressing questions.

The biggest question, of course, was answered last month. That's when we learned that Charles Kelly - of the New Hampshire-via-Oregon Kellys - is the man who will take Andy Reid's well-worn place on the Eagles sideline.

But since his initial and largely positive first impression, Kelly has pretty much vanished. He emerged, groundhog-like, for one early morning appearance at a radio event Friday, but otherwise he has been working (we hope) on the answers to the next round of questions.

The most pressing, of course, is who will coach Kelly's defense. The answer to that one is eagerly awaited for two reasons: first, and most obviously, because it is the most important job on Kelly's staff; second, because this hire will presumably put an end to the farcical double-secret coaching staff charade of the last few weeks.

It isn't clear why Kelly declined to announce his hires as he made them. He succeeded mostly in annoying fans eager to understand his vision while forcing grown men in Eagles gear to spend weeks pretending they don't work for the Eagles, at least in public.

But once Kelly hires his defensive coordinator, likely one of the assistants freed at the conclusion of Sunday's game in New Orleans, the embargo will be lifted. There will be some forward motion and some answers.

Will the new defensive coordinator switch to the 3-4 alignment Kelly is known to prefer?

Let's hope so. For years, Reid insisted on sticking with the 4-3 even though his own offense had huge problems against 3-4 schemes. So it was a chuckle when Reid announced that he would run a 3-4 in Kansas City.

    From the Sports Desk
    Stay Connected

There is only one compelling reason to stay with a 4-3: a roster full of players who are better and more effective in the 4-3. Kelly doesn't have that problem with the defense he's inheriting. Only a handful of players are worth keeping at all, and none were dominant enough in the 4-3 to cause even a moment's hesitation about switching.

A change in attitude is more important than the alignment here, anyway. A decade ago, I remember writing about how smart the Jim Johnson-coached Eagles defenders were. Each player not only knew his responsibility, he understood the concepts behind it. It was as far as you could get from watching Nnamdi Asomugha and Nate Allen try to figure out what coverage they were supposed to be in after an opponent's touchdown.

Smart. Tough. Physical. Bring those qualities back and you can line up anyway you want.

Of course, Kelly was hired to bring his innovative offensive ideas to the NFL. That experiment is going to provide the real drama and fascination over the next few years.

Kelly's reported hiring of former Reid assistant Pat Shurmur was a bit of a head-scratcher. Shurmur, most recently head coach of the Cleveland Browns, is a good man. He seems a peculiar choice to serve as coordinator of an offense he will be learning along with his players.

If Kelly was looking for someone who's been an NFL head coach and has a feel for Philadelphia and the Eagles, why not Brad Childress? He has more and more varied experience than Shurmur and played a key role in implementing Reid's original, successful plan.

Shurmur's most relevant recent experience was working with Sam Bradford in St. Louis and Brandon Weeden in Cleveland. So his hiring supports the idea that Kelly will jettison Michael Vick and develop a young quarterback - whether it is Nick Foles, a draft choice or former Oregon QB Dennis Dixon (now on Baltimore's practice squad).

But that's a surmise, like so much else about the burgeoning Kelly era. Now that the Super Bowl is finally over, we can start replacing surmises with real information.

"He succeeded mostly in annoying fans eager to understand his vision while forcing grown men in Eagles gear to spend weeks pretending they don't work for the Eagles"
I listened and read many comments on C.K. and the defensive coordinator/staff over the past couple of weeks. I don't remember any calling C.K. and the process "annoying". Most were concerned with him making a smart pick. Starting with the personal agenda early on this, Phil? You also seemed very angry over the McCoy thing last week. Objective criticism is fine, but your articles sound as if they are written by a jilted ex-girlfriend.

Dear Mr. Sheridan, I regret to inform you that while your qualifications are strong, we have select Mr. Chip Kelly as our head coach. He and only he will make all decisions regarding the Philadelphia Eagles coaches and schemes going forward. Yours Truly, Jeffrey Lurie.

Some if not most Philly writers give the impression that they hate their jobs, themselves, the teams they're forced to report on. Like if they got a new car the first thing they'd do is go out and tarnish the fenders so they could bit#h about the look to everyone.

Watching the game last night - I realized how far the Eagles are away from a Super Bowl. Both teams were remarkably physical, great QB play, intelligent coaching... Maybe we fixed the coaching, but we need a player or two that can hit instead of a bunch of arm tacklers.

With apologies to Whitey Ashburn, "Oh Brother." I got so tired of reading posts that talked about "Fat Andy" and now, look at how many chins Chip Kelly sports in the photo accompanying this article. This man and his radical offense better work or he'll be on the spit roasting over the flames that emanate from the less-than-gracious fan base in Philly. Oh Brother indeed.

Poor Phil (and his peer group) has to write about something. The Sixers and Flyers are in the tank for the season, local college B-ball is at an all time low, the Philles talent pursuit for 2013 ended up luke warm at best and Chip Kelly inherits an Eagles squad with zero star players (and a bunch of quitters to boot). This is a very low ebb for our beloved sports scene; maybe one of THE all time lowest. I watched two teams in yesterday's Super Bowl that the Eagles could not contend with in anyone's pipe dream. I guess what I am saying is that Phil's mid winter analysis is quite fitting for our mid winter blue circumstances. I am looking for Chip to convey some energy, leadership and charisma; anything to garner some optimism (Dick Vermile style); the nightmare of the present day is a haunting reminder of 1972.

World: it doesn't matter if Kelly has more chins than the Hong Kong phone book, he'll be judged on his record. Unfortunately for him, the likes of Sheridan will crawl all over him like marching ants if he doesn't win right away. Then, if and when he's got the Eagles playing good ball in a couple of years, they'll go back to feasting on individual player's faults.

Apparently, Sheridan's is letting his pining for his lost love Reid, to interfere with logic or just plain common sense. He conveniently "forgets" that Shurmur was also a Head Coach. That Childress was ALSO summarily terminated for failure to produce. That Shurmur ALSO has a "feel" for Philadelphia as well having coached here from 1999-2009. Childress on the other hand, was only with the Eagles from 1999-2005 prior to being hired to coach the Vikings. Who, then , has more of a "feel" for Philadelphia based on longevity alone? Childress is 56 Shurmur 47 so naturally, Childress has " more varied experience" . In addition, playing a "a key role in implementing Reid's original, successful plan." ( which is questionable at best since the Eagles STILL haven't won a Super Bowl trophy) and has absolutely nothing, nada, zilch to do with Kelly's impending plan. And it's not as though Childress is an expert in the Read Option so he would also be "learning along with his players". Sherman's arguments are specious and lack any real merit. Thank God the Eagles aren't listening to Sherman.

I think Kelly is probably wishing he were back in the loving arms of Oregon fans. He's already stumbling with the press and seemingly is as defiant as Reid. This guy appears lost, confused, and hapless. Good choice there, Lurie!

Of course he's making it up. When you have a deadline and have to come up with an original angle but have no true facts to back it up. You have to combine conjecture with enough known facts, half-truths, and nuances in order to fabricate a half-way plausible story in hopes of eliciting support for his fantasy. What bs.

The philly press has a tradition of being the most cynical, least intelligent, rude of any major market. For some reason, it's tolerated (not a good comment on the citizenry). Literary midgets like Sheridan stand on the shoulders of the philly literary midgets who came before them, which is why they can't see any farther than their noses. I don't blame Sheridan. I blame his boss. Other big tough towns like NYC, Chicago are able to balance objectivity with criticism. We deserve better. Fire Sheridan's boss and let a new guy come in and clean house.

The Tonner didn't really see any problems with this article. The Eagles do run their organization like it's some clandestine federal agency but the Tonner's used to it. Anyway, the Tonner is still riding out the morning Genny Cream Ale buzz leftover from last night so his judgement isn't all that sound. Take it for what it's worth.

I agree with the Tonner. This article just states the facts and some of you have trouble accepting that or fear to question the management. Explain why the coaches cannot say they have been hired yet? Does that really make any sense and help anyone? Is it stupid or at least uncalled for? Now there are no candidates for what they are saying is the most important job which is def coord. The handling of this whole off season has been a joke yet people still act like these guys know what they are doing. They had longer to find the right people because they knew Andy was gone in like week 6. It was like they did not really decide to fire him until the last game and had to start the hiring process then. They should have already had this mapped out long before the playoffs started with a Plan A and five other plans in their pocket to fall back on. This whole process has been a trainwreck and you are blind if you say otherwise.

Chip Kelly deserves to have a blank slate. Fans and the media needs to give him a few years to rebuild this roster. But sadly, Chip will not get a blank slate, and the media will not give him the time to rebuild the roster. The Philly sports media hangs its' hat on stirring up the negative, and passing that along to the reader. If they go to a 3-4, say goodbye to Trent Cole and Daryl Tapp, and possibly Brandon Graham, along with some of their undersized DTs.

Odd, elitist press types usually are criticizing the masses of americans for short attention and instant gratification complexes and here we have Sheridan displaying these qualities. He's also trying to project them onto us fans as well. Honestly, I'm a diehard fan who talks with a lot of other diehards and no has even suggested the slightest impatience with his selecting his staff. The press did the same thing when the Eagles took a mere two weeks to select Kelly. I think the press is out of touch with the fan base.

Release Vick, Shady and D-Jack so all of Philly's closet klansmen will be happy. Those who say the Eagle O-line is great and Vick is the worst QB in NFL history, not only are they dumb they are clearly racist. All of the Black players released by the Eagles will get picked up immediately. Other than haters, who wants Foles, who has only one win in his pro career? I know Brady, Manning, Ryan, Brees and others QB that three INTs to lose playoff games will love that great, HOF, Eagle offensive line. However, Kelly is smarter than the haters. Apparently Vick is going nowhere so continue to hate.

I had a huge beef with Sheridan back in the hey-day of the 2000s. Remember when he skewered T.O. and said that the Birds' offense and, in particular, Donovan would be better without him? How'd that work out, Phil? Guy has never been right about anything of importance related to the world of sports. I'm not a Kelly fan, but him not announcing his hirings doesn't make one bit of difference one way or the other. Move on, Phyllis.

Get over it and try to write a real column with some actual insight. Does sound like a warning shot and that's not fair to Kelly or the Eagles. Actually, the current roster is a key reason to stay with the 4-3. I've long favored the 3-4, but expect some growing pains, since so many players have been brought in who are made for the 4-3 (Kendricks, Ryans, Graham, and Cole, for instance, who coincidentally man the key positions in a transition).

Anyone who thinks the D only has a handful of good players knows little about the NFL. It's an NFL roster, a little better than the Colt's personnel, who went 10-6. Talent parity across the NFL is pretty close. You don't hear people outside Philly scorning this roster, including Kelly. A combination of injuries, coaching, and less than ideal chemistry conspired for a lousy season. A very similar roster could go 10-6 next year if there is better coaching and better luck on the injury front. Coaching chemistry may have been the key problem this year; this became publicly visible in the second half of the season.

What this roster can't do is win a Super Bowl. It didn't stand much chance with Kelce, Peters, and Herremans in the lineup, either. We had an exciting QB, not a Super Bowl QB. A defense with potential, but Reid never seemed able to get that potential once Johnson was gone. We need a QB who can take a good team all the way. Foles may be that guy. We need better safety play, probably different safeties. Something has to give at cornerback, either through coaching or player changes.

Even given facts Sheridan loads his work with surmises, unreasonable, biased inferences, and usually a negative tilt. Must be the editors, cause he keeps his job, despite years of ineptitude characterized by lack of creativity, objectivity, or a proper perspective of sports as pure entertainment and diversion. I find myself needing diversion from his type of journalism.

Hey Sheridan. "Nunya". As in "none of your business." The team will let you know when there's something for you or your brethren to report. Sounds like you're the only one annoyed. The Superbowl ended a little over 12 hours ago. Don't get your panties in a bunch.

This whole philly.com sports thing is becoming worthless. The articles, including this article, are mostly meaningless conjecture that I or any fan can make up and write as good as any writer who contributes content to Philly.com. Where have all the good sportswriters gone?

So now are you too sniffy to say "Wing Bowl"?

The overwhelming consensus is that Sheridan should be sent packing along with Mike Vick. Let's all send out a petition calling for that.

Come on guys, the article wasn't that bad, at least untill he got to the Brad Childress part. We simply need a DC who has some experience against the read-option offense because it is apparently going to sweep the NFL over the next few years, particulaarly if some team wins the SB with it which San Fran could do next year. Somebody will figure out how to stop it or at least keep it under control.

      Mr. Sheridan,

Your sarcasm in your column today cements once again the crappy climate you create for athletes and coaches in Philly. You think Kelly is interested in sharing his ideas with journalists at this stage? I am pretty sure the guy has not been cleaning his nose all this time. Can you just hold your fire until there is something to react to? It is called professionalism.
