Eagles president Don Smolenski will also have input on new coach

It was expected that Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie would use general manager Howie Roseman's input when determining the new coach, but another key person in the process is team president Don Smolenski.

It was expected that Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie would use general manager Howie Roseman's input when determining the new coach, but another key person in the process is team president Don Smolenski.

Although Smolenski does not have a direct role in football operations, he directs the organization's business and strategic efforts and will have an influential voice in the process.

"I bring in an understanding of the culture, I bring an understanding of the dynamic of the organization and how there are no barriers between the football operations and the business operations," Smolenski said. "It's really a seamless organization. The business operation works to provide the resources for the football program, and in turn the football team works to support the business operation. They go hand-in-hand."

Lurie called Smolenski a "breath of fresh air" and a "real forward-thinking" leader. Smolenski has been with the organization since 1998 and was chief financial officer when the Eagles hired Andy Reid in 1999. Smolenski was named president when Joe Banner left in June.

"I think he will be able to both present the Eagles in a terrific light and be able to help in the evaluation of the coaching world," Lurie said.

Smolenski's role will not be assessing the football acumen of the coach as much as his leadership qualities. He said an ideal leader for the position would need to have a vision; be smart and strategic; and understand how to bring a team together.

"I'm providing another voice for Jeffrey and Howie," Smolenski said. "While they may drill down on the football components, I'm focused on more of those type of qualities."
