Turnovers a worry for Vick

The Eagles QB had 18 giveaways for the season, up from nine in 2010.

By some measures, Mike Vick had one of his best days of the season Sunday. He threw for 335 yards and three touchdowns, a season high for scoring.

But he had an interception (his 14th of the year) and a lost fumble (his fourth), adding two more turnovers to the plague that hamstrung the Eagles offense this season. The Eagles won easily, 34-10, over the Redskins at home, but the mistakes were a reminder of the flaws that hurt this team so badly this year. Afterward, Vick veered between vowing to improve and downplaying his own role in his giveaways.

"You said it yourself, there's nothing you can do about it," Vick said in response to one question about his interceptions. "Certainly the turnovers hurt and didn't allow us to take it a step further and win [some] games. . . . I'll continue work in that area."

But later he said "I don't think our season was decided based on the interceptions that I threw." Many of his mistakes came off of tipped balls, he said.

"I take responsibility for that because [offensive coordinator Marty] Mornhinweg always tells me that's my responsibility," he said. But later added, "there's no way to prevent that other than, I don't know, talking to my quarterback coach and figuring it out. That's never happened to me before so, like I said, I'm not going to dwell on that."

Vick finished with 18 touchdowns, not far from the 21 he threw as an MVP candidate in 2010, but Vick's 18 turnovers were up from just nine last season.

His first big mistake came with just 44 seconds left in the first half. Vick fumbled while being sacked, giving Washington the ball on the Eagles' 17 (though Washington blew the opportunity). With the Eagles up 20-10 in the fourth, Vick tried a deep pass that was picked off, giving the Redskins life.

Neither hurt the team Sunday, and Vick certainly helped in a blowout win, with a 62-yard scoring strike to DeSean Jackson breaking Washington's back. But against better teams, turnovers killed the Eagles and must be corrected for the team to thrive.

"This offseason, I plan to work harder than I have ever worked before," Vick said. As his news conference concluded, he added, "I take responsibility for my actions. I'm man enough to say that. Next year will be totally different. I promise."
