NFL Films head Sabol being treated for brain tumor

NFL Films president Steve Sabol, who has a tumor on the left side of his brain, has told his staff that he is calm, collected, and determined.

NFL Films president Steve Sabol, who has a tumor on the left side of his brain, has told his staff that he is calm, collected, and determined.

"The doctors told me to make progress. I just have to 'move the chains' and keep making first downs (Merril Hoge will be happy with my game plan.)," Sabol wrote this week in an e-mail to the NFL Films staff. Hoge is an NFL analyst for ESPN.

NFL Films shared an excerpt of Sabol's letter with The Inquirer.

"Thank you all for your support and encouragement," Sabol wrote. "It means a great deal to me. I am calm and collected but very determined . . . don't give away my parking space!"

Doctors discovered the tumor after the 68-year-old Sabol suffered a seizure March 5 in Kansas City, Mo. He is expected to undergo radiation and chemotherapy treatments. An NFL Films spokesman said there was no further update on Sabol's condition.

Sabol has worked with NFL Films since 1964, when it was based in Center City. His father, Ed, founded the league's documentary arm and was elected in February to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Steve Sabol now runs NFL Films in Mount Laurel, N.J.
