NFL: League tells players: Cut out the trash talk

The league's chief disciplinarian has laid down the law: Cut out the trash talk, specifically when it threatens other players.

The league's chief disciplinarian has laid down the law: Cut out the trash talk, specifically when it threatens other players.

NFL executive vice president Ray Anderson "reminded players that comments of a physically threatening nature are always taken into account in evaluating discipline for any illegal physical contact on the field," the league warned Saturday.

Anderson was prompted to emphasize the need to respect opponents by the recent rash of trash talk in anticipation of the playoffs. For example:

Last week, Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie described Patriots quarterback Tom Brady with a derogatory term.

Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs wore a T-shirt with a Raven on it extending a middle finger.

And in the second meeting of the regular season between the AFC North rivals, the Ravens broke Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's nose - accidentally - on a hit by nose tackle Haloti Ngata.

"I was glad we broke his nose," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said with a wry grin this week, then added: "And I was very impressed he played through it."

Williams dodges DUI charge. Prosecutors in Florida have dropped a DUI charge filed in November against Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie receiver Mike Williams.

The Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office made the motion after a urine test showed that Williams had no drugs in his system when he was arrested Nov. 19 after his black Escalade was spotted weaving in and out of traffic around 2:30 a.m.

A Breathalyzer test, however, found Williams had a 0.065 percent blood-alcohol level, which is below Florida's 0.08 percent legal limit.

Prosecutors said the charge was dropped on the "totality" of evidence.

Broncos' McCoy stays put. Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy will remain with the team to work under new coach John Fox, sources have told NFL.com.

McCoy had drawn interest from the Kansas City Chiefs and Cleveland Browns.
