Eagles Notes: Rendell sounds off again on snow-delayed Eagles game

Ed Rendell hasn't been this mad since the Eagles traded Donovan McNabb to Washington.

The Pennsylvania governor and infamous Eagles fan who said in May that he would root for McNabb and the Redskins in the playoffs (oops) was irate over the NFL's decision to postpone Sunday's Eagles-Vikings game at Lincoln Financial Field because of a snowstorm.

"My biggest beef is that this is part of what's happened in this country," Rendell said Monday on WPEN-FM (97.5). "I think we've become wussies."

With the forecast calling for snow and high winds at game time and with Mayor Nutter declaring a snow emergency, the league postponed the Eagles-Vikings game about eight hours before an 8:20 p.m. kickoff. Citing public safety, the NFL pushed back the game to Tuesday night.

The decision, however, has drawn a storm of criticism. Several Eagles players tweeted their displeasure, fans voiced their anger on radio airwaves, and Internet message boards and pundits pointed fingers. But Rendell, who has been part of Comcast SportsNet's game-day coverage of the Eagles for years, was the most vocal.

He griped about the postponement Sunday night on Fox29, then went on the radio on Monday.

"It goes against everything that football is all about," Rendell said.

Rendell was mayor of Philadelphia from 1992 to 1999. The current mayor has been swallowed up in the controversy. Nutter has been criticized by some who believe he had something to do with the rescheduling.

Eagles president Joe Banner came to Nutter's defense.

"People are free to have their opinions on whether or not last night's Eagles game should have been postponed," Banner said Monday in a statement. "That decision was ultimately made by the NFL. Any criticism of the mayor, who was not involved in this decision, is completely unfair."

Officially, 12.4 inches of snow were recorded at Philadelphia International Airport. Rendell did not seem to care.

"What do you think [Vince] Lombardi would say?" Rendell said. "He would say that we've become a nation of wussies."

The NFL will announce its Pro Bowl teams Tuesday at 7 p.m. just before the Eagles take the field against the Vikings.

Several Eagles are expected to be named to the NFC team. Chief among them is quarterback Michael Vick, who finished second behind only Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in overall online voting. It would be Vick's fourth appearance after three nods in Atlanta.

Other possible candidates for the Eagles are wide receiver DeSean Jackson, running back LeSean McCoy, tackle Jason Peters, cornerback Asante Samuel, defensive end Trent Cole, and kicker David Akers.
