Eagles Notes: Vick named NFC offensive player of the month

For his unexpected success in the month of September, Michael Vick was named Wednesday the NFC offensive player of the month by the NFL.

For his unexpected success in the month of September, Michael Vick was named Wednesday the NFC offensive player of the month by the NFL.

The Eagles quarterback, who replaced Kevin Kolb in the second half of the opener after he suffered a concussion, nearly guided his team past Green Bay and then went on to win the next two games as the starter.

In three games, Vick has completed 54 of 89 passes for 750 yards, and has thrown six touchdowns against zero interceptions. He also has run 23 times for 170 yards and one score.

Vick's 110.2 passer rating is second in the NFL behind only Peyton Manning of Indianapolis.

"It was hard work," Vick said. "I'm grateful and thankful that I got honored with the award. Like I said, I've just got to go out and do the same thing in October."

Eagles safety Nate Allen was honored as the NFC defensive rookie of the month after recording two interceptions and 19 tackles in three games.

Gaither expects to sit

A week after starting at middle linebacker in place of the injured Stewart Bradley, Omar Gaither did not dress for the victory over Jacksonville.

Gaither said he did not expect to be active for Sunday's game against the Redskins. Rookie Jamar Chaney was Bradley's backup against the Jags.

Gaither was asked if his inactivity was an indication that the team felt he did not perform well in Detroit.

"I guess so," Gaither said. "I had pretty good stats - numbers-wise. But I guess there was more to it than that."

Gaither led the team with 11 tackles in the game but was often the victim in pass coverage when the Lions threw to either a tight end or a running back.

"I guess it's another roll-with-the-punches kind of situation for me," said Gaither, who has filled a number of roles for the Eagles since they drafted him in 2006. "So that's what I'm doing - keeping my head up, grinding. And who knows, maybe I'll get another opportunity."

Extra points

Trevor Laws was awarded another sack in Sunday's game against the Jaguars. The defensive tackle initially was credited with one sack - the first of his career - on Jacksonville's David Garrard. But the Eagles petitioned the league to review Laws' second-quarter tackle of the quarterback that originally was considered a run instead of a busted pass play. . . . Guard Nick Cole was held out of practice with an inflamed knee. . . . The following injured players were full participants in practice: tight end Brent Celek (wrist), defensive end Brandon Graham (ankle), wide receiver Jeremy Maclin (back), linebacker Ernie Sims (ankle), and tackle Austin Howard (back).
