Eagles have done well in most trades with division rivals

The 1964 trade that sent quarterback Sonny Jurgensen to the Redskins notwithstanding, the Eagles have fared pretty well when they've made trades with division rivals.

The 1964 trade that sent quarterback Sonny Jurgensen to the Redskins notwithstanding, the Eagles have fared pretty well when they've made trades with division rivals.

Even the 1997 deal that allowed the Eagles to jump up and draft first-round megabust Jon Harris still netted the Birds Jeremiah Trotter. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

Here's a look at the Eagles' deals within the NFC East over the last 15 years:

* The Deal - April 23, 2010:

Traded a second-round pick (linebacker Sean Lee) to Dallas for a second-round pick (later dealt to Cleveland) and a fourth-round pick (tight Clay Harbor).

Bottom line - Lee, from Penn State, lost out on being included in nickel coverage and (while also fighting a hamstring injury) has been deactivated each game thus far. The Eagles used the second-rounder from Dallas to acquire other picks that eventually netted defensive end Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, quarterback Mike Kafka and wide receiver Riley Cooper.

* The Deal - April 4, 2010:

Traded quarterback Donovan McNabb to Washington for a second-round pick (safety Nate Allen) and a third- or fourth-round pick in 2011.

Bottom line - It's been just three games, but Allen has been solid as the starting free safety.

* The Deal - April 28, 2007:

Traded a first-round pick (defensive end Anthony Spencer) to Dallas for a second-round pick (quarterback Kevin Kolb), a third-round pick (linebacker Stewart Bradley) and a fifth-round pick (safety C.J. Gaddis).

Bottom line - Spencer is a pretty good starting linebacker for Dallas and Bradley is the glue to the Eagles. It's probably an even deal now, but if Kolb ever puts the clipboard down, it could swing in the Eagles favor.

* The Deal - April 24, 2005:

Traded a fourth-round pick (defensive end Chris Canty) and a sixth-round pick in 2006 (defensive tackle Montavious Stanley) to Dallas for a fifth-round pick (traded to Indianapolis, defensive end Jonathan Welsh) and a fourth-round pick in 2006 (traded to Tennessee, linebacker Stephen Tulloch).

Bottom line - A minor deal, though subsequent trades eventually allowed the Eagles to select tackle Winston Justice and wide receiver Jason Avant. Canty spent four seasons with the Cowboys and is now part of the Giants' defensive-line rotation.

* The Deal - April 28, 1999:

Traded quarterback Rodney Peete to Washington for a sixth-round pick (center John Romero).

Bottom line - Peete was at the end of his career and played in just three games for the Redskins, which was three games more than Romero ever played for the Eagles.

* The Deal - April 19, 1998:

Traded a third-round pick (wide receiver Brian Alford) to the New York Giants for a third-round pick (cornerback/kick returner Allen Rossum) and fourth-round pick (cornerback Clarence Love).

Bottom line - Alford played in two games for the Giants, while Rossum went on to become a pretty decent return man. Problem for the Eagles was that he had his best years with Atlanta.

* The Deal - April 19, 1997:

Traded a first-round pick (tight end David LaFleur) to Dallas for picks in the first-round (defensive end Jon Harris) and fifth-round (tight end Luther Broughton) and a third-round pick in 1998 (linebacker Jeremiah Trotter).

Bottom line - LaFleur was mostly a blocking tight end in his 4-year career while Harris was one of the Eagles' all-time worst picks. Trotter was one of the top middle linebackers in recent Eagles history.
