Eagles aren't sure if Westbrook will play vs. Cowboys
THOUGH ANDY REID'S postgame implication was that Brian Westbrook was held out of the rout of the Giants merely as a precaution, Reid could not say yesterday that the Eagles' franchise back will be able to play Sunday night, when the Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys.
"We're going to make sure he's OK to perform. We're not going to do anything to put him in jeopardy there," Reid said at his day-after news conference. Reid acknowledged Westbrook's headache problem, his major symptom after suffering a concussion in last Monday night's victory at the Redskins, did not completely go away by the end of last week.
"He felt good during the exercise he did this past weekend here," Reid said. "One of the days he woke up with a slight headache - Saturday morning. It wasn't anything that was to worry too much about. He's feeling pretty good, and we'll just see how he does here, the closer we get to [tomorrow, when practice resumes]."
If Westbrook practices tomorrow, Reid said, "he's not going to do contact, which is not unusual for what we do as a team out there. We'll just see how he feels, he'll go through a normal practice."
Assertive Asante
Whether you're a fan of his tackling style or not, Asante Samuel has five interceptions in seven games, one more pick than he managed all of last season. Five in seven games is a lot.
"I think he's more familiar, more comfortable, he understands what we're doing much better, and he can just relax," Andy Reid said yesterday. "Remember last year, he had his hands on a lot of balls, but he dropped a few there early. I think he was pushing and pressing a little bit there."
Birdseed
There's no reason to think either defensive end Victor Abiamiri (knee) or wide receiver Kevin Curtis (knee) is close to playing . . . Linebacker Chris Gocong, who suffered quad and hamstring injuries Sunday, is "day to day," Andy Reid said. Gocong was replaced Sunday by rookie Moise Fokou . . . Defensive end Chris Clemons, who left the Giants game with a shoulder problem, was OK yesterday, Reid said.
