Eagles Notes: Peters expected to play Monday

The Eagles' biggest injury concern this week isn't Jason Peters.

Eagles coach Andy Reid said yesterday that the giant left offensive tackle will probably be able to play when the team travels south for a Monday Night Football game against the Washington Redskins.

"Jason Peters has a knee contusion and an ankle sprain, and he should be able to work through that and be ready this week," Reid said.

That's good news considering Peters left Sunday's ugly 13-9 loss to the Oakland Raiders midway through the first quarter and did not return.

The news for defensive end Victor Abiamiri or middle linebacker Omar Gaither may not be as good.

Reid said Abiamiri has a sprained left knee and that he has had problems with it before.

"I don't know how much practice time he'll get this week," the coach said.

Gaither, meanwhile, has a sprained foot and is listed as day to day.

The Eagles could probably handle being without Abiamiri, because they have some depth at defensive end, but Gaither's loss could cause a problem at middle linebacker.

Jeremiah Trotter's third tour of duty with the Eagles hasn't gone all that well through two games, by his own admission. After being burned for an 86-yard touchdown by tight end Zach Miller and a game-sealing 13-yard completion on a third-and-10 throw to Gary Russell on Sunday in Oakland, Trotter said he felt as though he had taken "two steps backward" in his bid to show he still belongs in the NFL.

Reid said he still thought Trotter was moving better than when the team cut him in August 2007.

"It's a matter of his keys and his reactions off of his keys and getting back that part of his game," Reid said. "He's actually moving better now than he did when we had him before. It's just getting back into playing. I think it's going to be a gradual thing. I expected that when he came in. I didn't expect him to jump right in and be 100 percent."

The trade deadline. Reid said the Eagles were looking to make a trade before today's deadline, but gave no details.

The player they're probably most likely to move is wide receiver Reggie Brown, who has become the team's fifth receiver. Brown has just one catch for 4 yards through five games, but the contract extension he signed in 2006 makes it difficult to deal him because the team would take a huge salary-cap hit.

Akers was available. It was reported in yesterday's issue that kicker David Akers wasn't available in the Eagles' locker room after missing field goals of 43 and 47 yards in the loss to the Raiders.

A team spokesman said Akers was available as soon as the locker room opened and that reporters walked by him without asking any questions.

As for the kicks, Reid said on his radio show, "The first one he pushed to the left and then he came back and he overcompensated and pushed one to the right. They were both with the wind, so they were makeable kicks. It's probably no different than a golfer. You just have to work through it. David is a good kicker. Consistency is a big thing in this league. He has a strong enough leg and you've just got to keep cranking. Nobody beats himself up more than David does."

Extra points. Defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley was listed on the injury report with a bruised rib, but Reid said "He's OK." . . .. Reid said that guard Todd Herremans, who has been out since the start of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left foot, has a chance to return Monday night against the Redskins. . . . The Eagles' players are off until Thursday because the game is not until Monday.
