Letters: Eagles should just pay the city that $8 million

Re: "Nutter denies Eagles' claim on Vet revenue deal," April 22: It is obvious why the Eagles would prefer to keep quiet the discussions regarding the $8 million that the city says the team owes. Publicity just might remind people of how the Eagles and their owner, Jeffrey Lurie, profited from the $181 million of taxpayer money ($85 million from the state and $96 million from the city) we contributed to build the fancy new stadium.

It is obvious why the Eagles would prefer to keep quiet the discussions regarding the $8 million that the city says the team owes. Publicity just might remind people of how the Eagles and their owner, Jeffrey Lurie, profited from the $181 million of taxpayer money ($85 million from the state and $96 million from the city) we contributed to build the fancy new stadium.

The team's value has jumped from the $185 million he paid just a few years ago to an estimated $1.1 billion now. The smart thing would be for the Eagles to just quietly give the city the disputed $8 million. They could consider it a small return to the city, as compared to the $181 million we gave them. And Philadelphia could well use the money.

It is ludicrous that the Eagles, with their financial acumen, would try to convince us that they had an oral commitment from Mayor Street for the $8 million reduction in taxes from Veterans Stadium sky-box revenue, knowing full well that by then Street was a short-time mayor.
