Eagles' Demps to start against Patriots

Faced with three muffed returns from Lorenzo Booker in last week's preseason win over Carolina, special-teams coach Rory Segrest said yesterday that rookie safety Quintin Demps would be the starter on kickoff returns against New England on Friday.

"We're still going to rep Booker back there, but we're going to try and get Quintin a majority of the reps," Segrest said.

A fourth-round pick from Texas-El Paso, Demps had one kick return for 28 yards and a punt return for minus-2 yards vs. the Panthers. Segrest said Booker is struggling to replicate in games what he does in practice.

The Birds had penciled in Booker as their returner after a draft-day trade from Miami. Now Demps could steal the job.

"We kind of had a feeling that it was either going to be Lorenzo or Quintin," Segrest said. "We're happy with either guy."

The 5-foot-11, 206-pound Demps returned kicks and punts in college. "My confidence has gotten better every day that I've gotten better," said Demps, whose play at free safety and corner also has been impressive during camp.

McNabb's a Rollins fan

Donovan McNabb's reaction to Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins saying that Philly fans are front-runners:

"When a question is asked, you answer it and you try to answer it correctly," McNabb said Monday. "That's the way he felt, and he expressed that. Some people can't take it; some people don't understand what he's talking about. He has never backed down from what he said.

"People laughed at him when he said they would win the NL East and then as the season continued on, everybody started getting excited about it. Jimmy is a good friend of mine. It's sad that he has to go through something like this, but I'm sure he'll pull himself out of it, and they will get that win streak and, hopefully, be in the World Series."

Andrews shows no rust

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg thinks right guard Shawn Andrews is ready and may play Friday against the Patriots.

"He looks pretty good," Mornhinweg said. "I have noticed no rust. He is a natural player.. . . It's good to have Shawn back."

Chip shots

Defensive end Trent Cole missed the lengthy afternoon practice with an undisclosed illness. . . . Practices are going longer as head coach Andy Reid and his staff continue evaluating their 80 players before cuts begin next week.
