The truth, according to Andrews' agent, is that Reid has been as supportive as anyone during the troubled player's 13-day absence from training camp.
"You could talk to Shawn, and he'd tell you the same thing," Rich Moran said during a phone interview from Orlando, Fla. "Andy has been nothing but sensitive to Shawn's situation. He didn't disclose this personal issue even though he has been peppered with questions about it."
Moran said Reid and the Eagles were caught off guard when Andrews revealed he was not going to attend training camp.
"Andy didn't find out Shawn wasn't mentally prepared to go to camp until 24 hours before," Moran said. "I talked to Andy right after that, and he told me it was in Shawn's best interest for me to fly to Little Rock and assess the situation. Andy thought it would be best if we made Shawn a doctor's appointment.
"Once we got the appointment, it took a few days to find out the diagnosis. That finally happened last Thursday, and it took a few days for Shawn to feel comfortable about it."
Moran said neither he nor Andrews were offended about receiving a letter that informed them the player could be fined $15,000 per day during his absence from training camp.
"Look at the timeline," Moran said. "Why would you not send the letter if you don't know what the problem is? They didn't know until they finally got the diagnosis. It was Andy who suggested to me that I go meet with Shawn, and Andy has communicated with Shawn and directly with the doctor. We've been working together to do what's best for Shawn and what's best for the Eagles."
Though Andrews said Monday that he is being fined $15,000 per day by the Eagles, the team has never said he would be fined for missing camp. The team has always declined to comment on that issue, and Reid did so again yesterday.
Andrews, after revealing his depression to The Inquirer and Daily News on Monday, continued to discuss his situation yesterday on local radio and television, going on at least four programs.
During an interview on WIP radio, Andrews said he talked with Reid yesterday.
"Now that Coach Reid understands that I have stepped forward and I do have a problem and I'm trying to get it rectified, I think he's more sensitive to what's going on," Andrews said. "I admitted that some of the rumors that have been out there actually were started by myself. Initially, he didn't know what to think because I'm telling him one thing and he's hearing all these other rumors. Coach Reid, he does have a heart, and I respect coach Reid and the organization."
After reiterating that he has an appointment with a doctor in Philadelphia tomorrow, Andrews said there was no guarantee that he'd be back on the practice field when the Eagles return to Lehigh on Sunday after Friday night's exhibition opener.
"It's not so much my call," he said. "I'm still under a doctor's care. I have another appointment Thursday, and I can't go in there faking I'm ready to go back. The problem isn't going to go away if I fake it. I'm going to see my doctor, and my medication is slowly taking effect, so I hope to be back and I want to be back. We'll see how it plays out."
Andrews did one on-camera interview with NBC10, and he had an eye-catching haircut that resembled a unique Mohawk. The Pro Bowl guard has had some different hairstyles during his four seasons with the Eagles.
During an interview with Comcast SportsNet, Andrews said that even though he wasn't diagnosed with depression until a "week or so ago," he knew he had some serious issues before that.
"I had some very un-Shawn Andrews-like thoughts," he said. "They were unlike anything I've experienced."
Andrews apologized to the Eagles, his teammates and the fans on several shows for the way he has handled his situation.
"The way I handled things initially with the organization, I apologize for that," he said. "To my teammates, I apologize how I handled things. To the fans that care and to those that don't care, I apologize to everybody. The whole city of Philadelphia and every Eagles fan across the world."
