Eagles lose Abiamiri to wrist injury

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Eagles suffered their first extended loss of a player, second-year defensive end Victor Abiamiri.

A second-round draft pick out of Notre Dame in 2007, Abiamiri had surgery yesterday on his dislocated right wrist and is expected to miss all of training camp and possibly the start of the season.

"I'm not ready to say it's a season-ending injury, but I'm not ready to say he's going to be ready for the opener, either," said Rick Burkholder, the team's head trainer. "He's going to miss the rest of training camp, and then we'll go from there."

Abiamiri, 24, injured his wrist during Sunday morning's practice. Burkholder said two screws were inserted to stabilize his wrist, and ligaments that tore away from the bone were repaired. Surgery was performed by a hand specialist, John Taras, at Hahnemann University Hospital.

Burkholder said the nature of Abiamiri's position could possibly delay his return because a defensive end puts pressure on the wrist in a three-point stance, and his first move is to put his hand on the chest of an offensive lineman. The trainer seemed doubtful that Abiamiri would be available for the season opener against St. Louis on Sept. 7.

"We're going to cut into some of the season probably, especially since he can't go here" at training camp, Burkholder said.

Eagles coach Andy Reid said Abiamiri's loss was significant because he figured in the rotation of defensive linemen.

"It's not good. He was playing well," Reid said. "We're lucky we have numbers there, but he was definitely a guy that we were expecting to be in there from the get-go. He was competing for a starting job there."

The 6-foot-4, 267-pound Abiamiri played in six games his rookie season and started once opposite Trent Cole. His playing time increased the final three games of the season. Burkholder said Abiamiri would return to training camp, possibly tomorrow, for conditioning.
