NFL: Harrison cheered at camp, but Colts without Manning

Indianapolis receiver Marvin Harrison walked onto the field in Terre Haute to cheers from the crowd yesterday, while the Colts opened their first training-camp practice since 1998 without quarterback Peyton Manning. He is in Indianapolis recovering from surgery to remove an infected bursa sac from his left knee.

The 35-year-old Harrison, who missed most of last season because of a left-knee injury, has not played in a regular-season game since Oct. 22, though he played in the Colts' playoff loss in January.

"It was good to see him smiling and running easy," coach Tony Dungy said. "When he's smiling, things are pretty much normal."

On May 2, Harrison was investigated by Philadelphia police about a shooting at a bar Harrison owns in the city, though he was not arrested or considered involved in the incident.

Burress injured. Plaxico Burress missed the New York Giants' first two training-camp practices in Albany, N.Y., with an ankle injury while his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, spoke with the Super Bowl champions about renegotiating his contract.

"There is no connection," Rosenhaus said when asked whether the receiver was sitting out because of the contract problems.

Burress, who caught a late game-winning 13-yard touchdown pass in the Super Bowl, refused to practice during a minicamp in June because he wanted a new contract. He was fined about $25,000.

Holdouts. The Buffalo Bills could begin fining Jason Peters up to $15,000 a day after the Pro Bowl left tackle failed to report for the start of training camp in Pittsford, N.Y., because of a contract dispute.

Draft pick Leodis McKelvin, a cornerback picked in the first round, is still negotiating his rookie contract.

Peters' absence was not unexpected, especially after he was fined $8,638 for missing all of the team's 15 spring minicamp sessions, including two mandatory practices.

Also, St. Louis running back Steven Jackson, entering the final year of his contract, was a no-show for the Rams' camp in Mequon, Wis., while veteran receiver Terry Glenn, 34, wasn't on the field with the Dallas Cowboys for their first practice in Oxnard, Calif. The Cowboys said they will waive him.

However, Chicago Bears kick-return star Devin Hester reported to training camp in Bourbonnais, Ill., ending his holdout while negotiations on a new contract continue.

Top picks signed. Vernon Gholston's holdout lasted one day and two practices. The New York Jets signed the No. 6 overall pick to a multiyear deal, in time for the defensive end/linebacker to be on the field in Hempstead, N.Y., with his teammates for the start of practice on the second day of training camp.

Gholston's agent, Ben Dogra, told the Associated Press that the contract is worth $50 million, with $21 million guaranteed over five years.

Lawrence Jackson, the Seattle Seahawks' top draft choice and the 28th overall pick out of Southern California, reported to training camp in Kirkland, Wash., and was practicing with the team.

Jackson agreed to a five-year, $11.25 million contract, according to a person familiar with the deal.

Second-round pick John Carlson, a tight end from Notre Dame who is expected to be Seattle's starting tight end, is still unsigned and not in camp.

Other first-round picks who inked deals were offensive lineman Duane Brown, agreeing to undisclosed terms with the Houston Texans; cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, the 16th overall choice of the Arizona Cardinals; running back Rashard Mendenhall, the 23d overall pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers who agreed to a five-year deal reportedly worth nearly $12.6 million; tackle Jeff Otah, the 19th overall pick of the Carolina Panthers; and left tackle Ryan Clady, the 12th overall choice of the Denver Broncos who signed a deal believed to be worth $20 million over six years.

Haynesworth signs. Chad Speck, agent for Tennessee all-pro defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, said his client agreed to terms with the Titans on his one-year tender as their franchise player.

The exact terms were not immediately known. Haynesworth had asked the Titans not to designate him as their franchise player if he signed their tender for $7.25 million.

Jones apologetic. Receiver Matt Jones, speaking publicly for the first time since his arrest on a felony drug charge in Arkansas, expressed remorse for putting himself and the Jacksonville Jaguars in a negative light. He also apologized to team owner Wayne Weaver, coach Jack Del Rio and some teammates, and said he was committed to making the roster.

Jones was arrested July 10 in Fayetteville, his former college town, after police said he was inside a car cutting up cocaine with a credit card.

Noteworthy. Danny Woodhead, the NCAA's career rushing leader, was carted off the New York Jets practice field with an apparent knee injury. The extent was not specified by the team. . . . The Detroit Lions signed cornerback Leigh Bodden to a four-year extension through 2013, adding $27 million to his contract. . . . The Oakland Raiders finally released running back LaMont Jordan after being unable to trade him to another team. . . . The New Orleans Saints released veteran tight end Eric Johnson. His starting job was jeopardized after the Saints traded for Jeremy Shockey earlier in the week.
