The rings were a reminder of what once was, the shades to hide the tears.
Smith stepped into a room full of family, friends and Denver Broncos teammates yesterday and said his NFL career was done.
"I gave them everything I had," he said as he choked up while announcing his retirement.
Chargers. First-round draft pick Antoine Cason signed a five-year deal worth $12 million, assuring he will be in camp when San Diego holds its first full-squad practice today. He missed three days of rookie camp.
Bears. First-round draft pick Chris Williams left practice because of lower-back stiffness. Williams signed his five-year, $13 million contract just in time to participate in Chicago's first practice on Wednesday.
Lions. Detroit and cornerback Leigh Bodden have agreed on a four-year, $27 million contract extension, the Associated Press said.
The AP said Bodden's deal included a $2 million signing bonus and a $8.6 million roster bonus if he is on the team in March. The contract extension was first reported by the NFL Network.
Cardinals. Wide receiver Anquan Boldin lashed out at the Arizona organization for failing to follow through on what he said was a promise for a new contract.
He said that he had told agent Drew Rosenhaus to end negotiations, and that he would not re-sign with the team.
Boldin has three years remaining on the four-year, $22.75 million contract extension he signed after the 2005 season that keeps him under contract through 2010. He is making an average of $4 million a year.
Arizona's other standout receiver, Larry Fitzgerald, signed a four-year, $40 million deal after last season, with $30 million guaranteed.
Packers. Green Bay reached agreement on a contract extension for linebacker Brady Poppinga, general manager Ted Thompson said.
Thompson also addressed a crowd of 9,375 people who attended the team's annual shareholders meeting and pleasantly applauded Thompson and Mark Murphy, team president and CEO, then gave a sustained standing ovation to coach Mike McCarthy.
The reaction seemed to indicate that many of the fans who own a stake in the team back the front office in its standoff with quarterback Brett Favre.
Murphy said the team was considering postponing a ceremony to retire Favre's No. 4 jersey. The retirement was scheduled for Sept. 8, the Packers' season opener.
Raiders. Star cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha signed his $9.765 million franchise-player tender offer and joined Oakland in time for the first training camp practice, while running back LaMont Jordan stayed away.
Jordan is scheduled to make $4.7 million this year and $5 million next season, but he has no role with the Raiders after the team drafted Darren McFadden.
Redskins. Rookie receiver Devin Thomas probably will miss the team's first exhibition game after pulling his right hamstring in practice. The Redskins will play in the Aug. 3 Hall of Fame game.
49ers. San Francisco signed defensive lineman Kentwan Balmer of North Carolina, getting its first-round draft pick into training camp before the team's first meeting.
Giants. Super Bowl hero David Tyree was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list by New York because of lingering problems while recovering from surgery on his right knee in April.
Jurisprudence. Former Minnesota Vikings defensive lineman Darrion Scott received a two-year stayed sentence for putting a plastic bag over his 2-year-old son's head.
Scott, who was also fined $200, pleaded guilty earlier this month to child endangerment and called his actions "stupid and reckless."
Moves. The Cincinnati Bengals released cornerback Blue Adams. . . . Third-round draft pick Chris Ellis and sixth-rounder Xavier Omon signed four-year contracts with the Buffalo Bills. . . . Kansas City signed tackle Branden Albert of Virginia, the second of the Chiefs' two first-round draft picks.
