Report: Favre made calls to Childress

According to a report, Brett Favre continued to use a cell phone issued to him by Green Bay after his retirement announcement in March, which allowed the Packers to check phone records and discover repeated calls to Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentenel, citing a source, reported the story yesterday.

Another newspaper, the Star Tribune in Minneapolis, reported yesterday that NFL security personnel visited the Vikings' training camp and interviewed team officials regarding a tampering charge the Packers had filed. Green Bay filed the charge last week, alleging "inappropriate dialogue" between the Vikings and Favre, who has said he wants to unretire and wants out of Green Bay.

Favre has asked to be released from his contract, a request the team said it has no plans to grant.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has said that if Favre asks, he will reinstate him as an active player. Favre's contractual rights belong to the Packers until his current deal expires after the 2010 season.

ESPN reported that sources said Goodell has urged Packers general manager Ted Thompson to shop Favre around the league to determine if there is a trade partner.

There is speculation Tampa Bay would be interested in acquiring Favre. The St. Petersburg Times reported Bucs quarterback Chris Simms, who wants out of Tampa Bay, said he was approached by team GM Bruce Allen about how Favre would fare in the team's offense with limited preparation.

* Detroit's seventh-round draft pick, Caleb Campbell, will not get a chance to play professional football because of a change in military policy.

At the time of the draft, Army policy would have allowed the West Point graduate to serve as a recruiter if he made the team. But a subsequent Department of Defense policy has changed that.

In a letter to Lions president Matt Millen, the Army wrote that Campbell has been ordered to give up professional football for "full-time traditional military duties."

* Denver receiver Rod Smith is planning to hold a news conference today amid published reports that he will retire.

Smith, 38, has been on the reserve/retired list since February and has had two hip operations in the last year. He is the franchise's career leader in every major receiving category.

* San Diego released wide receiver Eric Parker, who missed all of last season with a toe injury and became expendable after Chris Chambers was acquired in a midseason trade with Miami.

* Pro Bowl kick returner Devin Hester was placed on Chicago's "Did Not Report" list after missing the first day of training camp. The reason for his absence was not immediately known.

* St. Louis defensive tackle Claude Wroten was suspended without pay for the entire 2008 season due to another violation of the league's substance-abuse policy. Wroten, entering his third season with the Rams, was suspended for four games last season.

* For the second time in 7 weeks, Oakland told running back LaMont Jordan to stay away from team activities. The Raiders kept Jordan away from their minicamp in June and have been trying to trade him. He became expendable amid a glut of running backs, including first-round draft choice Darren McFadden.

* New Orleans and wide receiver Marques Colston have agreed to a 3-year contract extension. Colston, a seventh-round pick out of Hofstra in 2006, has 2,241 yards in two seasons with the Saints.

* Wide receiver Joe Jurevicius and offensive lineman Ryan Tucker were placed on the active physically unable to perform list as Cleveland opened training camp. Jurevicius, who caught 50 passes - 29 on third down - last season, has had two operations on his right knee since the end of last season. The 33-year-old Tucker broke his hip during minicamp in May and had surgery in June. *
