Eagles Notes

Hurting rookie Laws will not practice

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - There were no Trevor Laws sightings as the Eagles' rookies and some selected veterans checked into the Sayre Village dorms yesterday afternoon at Lehigh University.

Had there been one, the rookie defensive tackle might have been the guy with a noticeable limp.

Laws' arrival at Lehigh was slightly delayed because he did not agree to his four-year deal with the Eagles until after the 5 p.m. reporting deadline. Even though he will be in attendance for the team's first practice this morning, Laws, the team's first overall pick in this year's draft, will not participate because of a foot injury.

"Trevor has a foot injury that has been bothering him a little bit," coach Andy Reid said.

Laws, the 47th overall selection, out of Notre Dame, suffered the injury during an off-season workout in Minnesota.

"He won't go through the first couple of days here," Reid said.

Third-round pick Bryan Smith, a defensive end, will also be sidelined in the early portion of camp because of a hamstring injury.

"Pete Jenkins [the defensive-line coach] might not have much to do," Reid said. "Bryan Smith has a hamstring [injury], and he's getting an MRI on that."

The signing of Laws meant the Eagles have signed all 10 of their draft picks. Rookie receiver DeSean Jackson signed late Sunday night and said he's ready to go to work after missing much of the Eagles' last spring camp with a hamstring injury.

"I've been working hard on [the hamstring], and it's 100 percent right now," Jackson said.

"The best thing for me was to get into camp and leave a good impression on everybody."

NFC East movement

Reid was asked about the Washington Redskins' acquisition of veteran defensive end Jason Taylor on Sunday and the New York Giants' trade that sent veteran tight end Jeremy Shockey to New Orleans yesterday.

"[Taylor] is a tremendous player, so I think he will help them," Reid said. "I think Jeremy is a very good football player, but I will also say this: They won a Super Bowl without him. The young man that filled in for him did a great job."

Kevin Boss, a rookie who made some huge catches in the playoffs for the Giants, is the starter at tight end.

Reid said the Eagles never had serious conversations with Miami about acquiring Taylor.

Time to hit

Running back Brian Westbrook hinted that the Eagles didn't need to hit as much as they do at training camp, but Reid indicated that won't change.

"The game is about blocking and tackling," he said. "If you don't do those well, then you're probably not going to win very many games. And I think in order to do those well, I think you need to practice it. That's one of my beliefs, and that's why we do it."

Extra points

Reid said Kevin Kolb would continue to work as the No. 2 quarterback behind Donovan McNabb and ahead of A.J. Feeley. . . . Twenty-seven of the 80 players reported yesterday. Among the veterans reporting were McNabb, Feeley, Kolb, Rocky Boiman, Brent Celek, Ryan Moats and Sean Considine.
