Eagles sign third-round pick

The Eagles yesterday signed third-round draft pick Bryan Smith, a 6-foot-2, 245-pound defensive end who starred at Division I-AA McNeese State.

Smith recorded 31 sacks and 187 tackles in 31 games. He was a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the Division I-AA player of the year, after his junior season when he recorded 84 tackles and 13 1/2 sacks.

Two of the Eagles' 10 draft picks remain unsigned: defensive tackle Trevor Laws and wide receiver DeSean Jackson, their second-round selections.

The Eagles will begin training camp on July 21, when rookies and selected veterans will report.

John L. Jackson, Jr., an associate professor of anthropology and communications at Penn, says African Americans live with a constant suspicion about racism in their daily lives.

But while politically correct talk once ensured that African Americans would be free of verbal intimidation, Jackson says that mentality has stifled "any honest discussions about race."
