NFL: Driver pleads guilty in Sean Taylor killing

The man who drove a band of young men from Fort Myers, Fla., to Miami for an ill-fated burglary that ended in the killing of NFL star Sean Taylor pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed burglary yesterday.

Venjah Hunte will serve 29 years in prison. The deal was unsealed Wednesday, hours after a fifth suspect, Timothy Brown, 16, was arrested and charged with murder.

Taylor was shot in the groin during a botched burglary on Nov. 26 inside his Palmetto Bay house. The Washington Redskins star died later at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Spygate. Former New England assistant coach Brian Daboll told the NFL he did not remember speaking with Matt Walsh about the St. Louis Rams' walk-through that Walsh attended the day before the 2002 Super Bowl.

Even if Daboll and New England's former video assistant did speak about it, it would not be a violation of NFL rules, the league said.

Walsh said he told Daboll that running back Marshall Faulk was returning kicks and described the Rams' use of tight ends in their formations. Daboll did not mention such a conversation when he was first interviewed by NFL officials, a league spokesman said.

"He has no recollection of a conversation with Matt Walsh about the Rams' walk-through practice," a league official said. "Even if such a conversation occurred, it would not be a violation of NFL rules."

Jaguars. Defensive tackle Rob Meier, who is replacing three-time Pro Bowl player Marcus Stroud in the starting lineup this season, signed a four-year contract extension. Details were not disclosed.

Redskins. Washington released former Pro Bowl kick returner Jerome Mathis and signed undrafted rookie defensive end J.T. Mapu.

Mathis made the Pro Bowl as a returner with the Houston Texans in 2005, but he was injured for most of the last two seasons.

Browns. Cleveland signed free agent defensive back Jereme Perry to a one-year contract. Perry played 12 games for the Browns in 2006 after earning a roster spot as an undrafted free agent from Eastern Michigan. He played in four games on special teams for Miami last season.
