Eagles - Eagles giving quarterback Kolb a second look
"We'll see," offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said yesterday when asked whether the team's '07 second-round pick is ready to leapfrog over A.J. Feeley and serve as Donovan McNabb's understudy next season.
"He's working hard, both mentally and physically. He's continuing to impress and he's continued to get better in every phase and I would expect him to play well through these camps and into the preseason.
"But A.J.'s a veteran that's won games in this league and has done a nice job in many situations for us. So there's a pretty good competition going on there."
Feeley almost orchestrated an upset win over the New England Patriots last November when McNabb missed two games with an ankle sprain. But he also threw three interceptions against the Pats and four more the next week in a loss to Seattle.
Kolb spent most of his rookie season as the team's No. 3 quarterback behind McNabb and Feeley. But when you select a quarterback as high as they did him (the 36th overall pick), it would be foolish to keep him behind Feeley for another year.
Kolb has taken all of the snaps with the No. 2 offense in the team's 3-day minicamp, which concludes today. Yesterday afternoon, he also got some work with the No. 1 unit.
"The more reps I get, the more I feel like I'm going to progress," Kolb said. "That's what I like about being the 2 [in minicamp] the most. I'm getting the most reps.
"Anytime I can get in a rhythm, I just feel a lot more comfortable. When I can build up a sweat and build a rapport with the guys I'm in with, you just feel a lot more comfortable."
Kolb struggled at the end of the afternoon practice yesterday. After replacing McNabb with the No. 1 offense, he threw two interceptions in 11-on-11 work. Cornerback Asante Samuel stepped in front of a slant pass for tight end L.J. Smith. A little later, another pass over the middle for Smith was picked off by middle linebacker Stewart Bradley.

Offensive tackle Jon Runyan was excused from both practices yesterday. He'll be back on the field this morning for the team's final practice of minicamp . . . Middle linebacker Stewart Bradley has been calling the defensive signals in the minicamp practices . . . Running back Brian Westbrook has 694 touches over the last two seasons, including 372 last year. Asked whether he'd like a slightly lighter load in '08, he said: "I wouldn't mind it being the same. I think I've been very productive with the ball in my hands with that many touches. I think I can continue to do that" . . . Rookies DeSean Jackson and Quintin Demps have been taking all of the punt-return reps. *
