Eagles Notes
This was a forum for the Eagles to express their views about what has transpired in the off-season, and neither
Donovan McNabb nor running back
Brian Westbrook was critical.
McNabb was asked after the team's morning workout yesterday whether he thought the Eagles could have been more aggressive in getting those playmakers he blogged about shortly after the end of the 2007 season.
He smiled at the loaded question and said, "I think they did a great job."
The Eagles, who finished 17th in scoring offense and 24th at scoring inside the 20-yard line, did not make any major offensive additions in free agency, but McNabb said at one point that "we can win the Super Bowl with this team."
"It's not about me being disappointed or excited," McNabb said. "The guys we have here made plays for us last year. I think people forget . . .
Kevin Curtis had 1,000 yards receiving. We showed signs in our passing game, and we just have to be more consistent."
McNabb said he wasn't necessarily talking about wide receivers when he said the team needed some playmakers.
"I said playmakers; I didn't say receivers," the quarterback said. "I said guys that can come in and make plays for us. We brought in
Asante [
Samuel] . . . that was a start."
The quarterback said it's not fair to expect too much from the 2008 draft class, including wide receiver/returner
DeSean Jackson.
"It's hard to put pressure on these young guys coming in, because you wouldn't throw them into the fire like that," McNabb said. "I think [Jackson] fits in well. I think it will be big for us to get some good field position and start the offense in the right position . . . but again you can't put that much pressure on these young guys."
Westbrook said that it wasn't up to him to make football decisions and that the Eagles have the offensive firepower to make a Super Bowl run.
"I just have to deal with whatever we have, and, hopefully, those players that we added can make a difference on this football team," Westbrook said. "I think last year we had enough. We didn't play well at the beginning of the season, and that took away from the things we were able to do at the end."
Extra points
Victor Abiamiri lined up with the first-team defense at left defensive end. . . . McNabb said he didn't know the details of a police investigation involving Indianapolis wide receiver
Marvin Harrison concerning a shooting in North Philadelphia. McNabb played with Harrison in college at Syracuse. "I know what kind of person Marvin is, and it just doesn't sound like Marvin," McNabb said. "I don't actually know what's going on." . . . Westbrook was asked whether the $3 million he will be paid this season was fair compensation for his remarkable all-pro contributions last season. "I signed a contract a little while ago and, hopefully, it was fair at that point and that's what I signed at that point," he said. "There's no sense for me to cry about it right now."
