That's all that differentiates the words daft and draft.
Once again, the Eagles proved it's impossible to predict their first-round pick.
Even two minutes before the team was due to make it.
Saturday, the Birds' big surprise was swapping their No. 1 to Carolina for a first next year, and second- and fourth-rounders this year.
So if guessing the almost-here-and-now is impossible, what you call predicting the picks next year?
About as accurate as flinging Frisbees during a tornado.
But, believe it or not, sports fans, that's just what some draftniks do.
They've already posted their 2009 NFL mock drafts online.
Some even went up before this year's draft - and haven't been updated since.
No wonder they make some bloggers laugh.
Then again, fellow football fans ... what else is there to do right now?
So, herewith, just for fun, are who some "future shock" drafts guess the Eagles will take, grouped by position. Unless noted, these mocks were updated this week.Tip: Click the website name for a link to the 2009 mock draft.
Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, Maryland. "The Eagles failed to land a go-to-receiver in the 2008 draft (no, DeSean Jackson does not qualify). ... a future primary target for future QB Kevin Kolb," writes Todd McShay of Scouts, Inc. for ESPN.com. (Projected at No. 15, with Carolina pick.)
Wide receiver Michael Jones, Arizona State. "The Eagles are undoubtedly still trying to trade for a premiere receiver this offseason, but if they can't, watch out for Michael Jones," says Andrew Perloff of Fan Nation, an SI.com blog. Ten of his 46 catches as a junior were TDs. (No. 24, Eagles' own pick.)
Wide receiver Percy Harvin, Florida. The "talented" Harvin is "a gamble" but fills a need because second-rounder Jackson "isn't a good fit in Philly," asserts nfldraftwatch.net. (No. 25, Eagles' own pick.)
Offensive tackle Phil Loadholt, Oklahoma. Because Andy Reid didn't get an OT this time around, he "will be craving a big fella like Loadholt in 2009," says McShay for ESPN.com. (No. 18, Eagles' own pick.)
Offensive tackle Andre Smith, Alabama. "A great talent who'll shoot up the boards," says nfldraftwatch.net. (No. 12, from Carolina.)
Offensive tackle Eugene Monroe, Virginia. Like his predecessor as his position, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Monroe should be a first-round pick, writes Rivals.com. (No. 12, from Carolina.)
Offensive tackle Alex Boone, Ohio State. Although this projection was made in early April, it correctly guessed the Eagles might fail to grab a top pass protector in 2008. "Massive offensive tackle," says Walter Cherepinsky of walterfootball.com. (No. 21, Eagles' own pick.)
Tight end Travis Beckum, Wisconsin. "75 catches for 982 yards last season ... nice safety blanket for Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb," writes Perloff of SI.com's Fan Nation blog.. (No. 12, from Carolina.)
Tight end Brandon Pettigrew, Oklahoma State. "Potential Pro Bowl tight end with nice size," says nfldraftdog.com. (No. 13, from Carolina.)
Defensive end George Selvie, South Florida. "Big East defensive player of the year in 2007. Has a great first step and very good athleticism," writes Rivals.com. (No. 17, Eagles' own pick.)
Defensive end Tyson Jackson, LSU. "The Eagles had a nice signing with Chris Clemons, but I think he is more of a rotational player," writes Michael Abromowitz at thefootballexpert.com. So Jackson could be the needed "strong stud opposite [Trent] Cole."(No. 19, Eagles' own pick.)
Defensive end Greg Middleton, Indiana. "Playmaker" who "led the nation in sacks in 2007 with 16," says nfldraftdog.com. (No. 15, Eagles' own pick.)
Safety William Moore, Missouri. "Big man with a lot of athletic ability and position skills," Tom Marino, of Scout.com, wrote for FoxSports.com back in March. (No. 16, Eagles' own pick.)
