Klecko joining Birds as fullback

The Eagles added a guy with a nice collection of jewelry yesterday.

Dan Klecko has three Super Bowl rings, and coach Andy Reid hopes he gets a fourth one next season because the former Temple star is returning to Philadelphia as a member of the Eagles.

Klecko, a 27-year-old free agent, agreed to a one-year deal with the team and will go to training camp trying to win the job as the starting fullback. The deal will become official Monday, after Klecko takes a physical.

"This was the opportunity Dan was looking for," Paul Sheehy, Klecko's agent, said from his Colorado office. "He's played fullback over 400 snaps in his career. This isn't like a novelty to him. He's always felt he could be an excellent fullback if he was given a chance to do it full-time."

Klecko played defensive line and linebacker at Temple and was a fourth-round draft choice of the New England Patriots in 2003. He played fullback and defensive tackle during three seasons in New England and was part of two Super Bowl title teams.

He continued to play defensive tackle and fullback after Indianapolis claimed him off waivers in 2006, and even caught a touchdown pass against New England in the 2007 AFC championship game. The Colts won the Super Bowl in his first season with Indianapolis.

Klecko has four career receptions for 20 yards and a touchdown, and two career rushes for 5 yards.

The Eagles' fullback position has been up for grabs since Thomas Tapeh signed with the Minnesota Vikings as a free agent. At the moment, Klecko's primary competition at fullback is Jason Davis.

Davis, an undrafted rookie free agent out of Illinois in 2006, spent his first season on injured reserve and last season on the Eagles' practice squad.

Klecko's ability to play on special teams gives the Eagles something they were not getting from Tapeh. In three seasons with the Eagles, Tapeh caught 26 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown, and ran 22 times for 69 yards. He did not play on any special teams.

Sheehy said Klecko was excited about returning to the city where he played college football.

"It was the number-one place on my marching orders," Sheehy said. "He just bought a house in Mullica Hill [Gloucester County], which is about 20 minutes away from the stadium, and it's an ideal situation."
