The Eagles released Todd Bowles from his contract to allow the defensive coordinator to interview with other teams, an NFL source said.

There were several reports on Friday that Bowles was expected to get the defensive coordinator job with the Cardinals. He would be joining his former Temple coach, Bruce Arians, who was named Arizona's head coach on Thursday.

Bowles, who was promoted by the Eagles midseason after Juan Castillo was fired, will replace Ray Horton, who left for the Browns. The Eagles reached out to Horton after the Cardinals released him from his contract, according to a league source, but it was unclear how interested they were in the 52-year-old.

The Eagles and new coach Chip Kelly, in their search for a defensive coordinator, have been linked most prominently to Georgia's Todd Grantham. He has been the defensive coordinator at Georgia for the last four seasons but was in the NFL for the previous 11 years.

He's also going to need an offensive coordinator: Marty Mornhinweg was hired by the New York Jets on Friday, according to reports. His contract didn't expire until February, but the Eagles allowed him to meet with teams after Andy Reid was fired on Dec. 31. He could not be reached for comment.

Kelly met with the Eagles' remaining assistants on Thursday. He started calling players that were not at the NovaCare Complex for his introductory news conference on Thursday evening, including quarterbacks Michael Vick and Nick Foles, running back LeSean McCoy, and wide receiver DeSean Jackson.

There have been that Kelly plans to bring some of his former staffers to Philadelphia to talk about vacancies. There was a report that Jerry Azzinaro would come as his defensive line coach, although the team has not confirmed any coaching hires.

There was another report that Oregon assistant athletic director James Harris was hired by the Eagles to be an assistant general manager to GM Howie Roseman, but an NFL source said that wasn't case. Harris is expected to join the team in some capacity.
