Kelly Watch Ends: If It Quacks Like A Duck

POSTED: Monday, January 7, 2013, 12:07 AM

Oregon coach Chip Kelly told the Eagles he will remain with the Ducks, a source close to the situation confirmed Sunday night.

The Eagles and Browns, the two teams who courted Kelly most seriously, seemed prepared for the decision. the Eagles interviewed Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy Sunday, and the Browns basically announced they were moving on, before Kelly's decision was made.

The easy assumption is that Nike's Phil Knight, the godfather of the Oregon program, stepped up with more cash for Kelly, who already made $3.5 million a year. But it also seems possible that Kelly might not have gotten the kind of control over Browns or Eagles operations that a big-time college coach is accustomed to having.

The Eagles have never named a favored candidate, but their longest interviews so far, by a long shot, have been with Penn State coach Bill O'Brien and Kelly, who both decided to stay in college. it's hard not to infer they were the top candidates.

Much like what happened when they had no legitimate DC candidates after hiring line coach Washburn, the Eagles are running out of options for a GOOD head coach, what with a "football guy" like Howie Roseman already in place.

Lurie will be left with scraps to pick from (although the eventual hire will be proclaimed as "our guy all along").

Came down to money, and a billion dollar pro franchise couldn't come up with the dough and the power to outclass a PAC school. LAME.

Not yet jman, Bradley from Seattle could be the winner.

camasbud, make no mistake, Pete Carrol is the real defensive guru in Seattle. Bradley is just helping Carrol implement the D.

Chip Kelly used the Eagles and Browns to get a raise. Two nine hour meetings. I hope nobody in the NFL takes this guy seriously again.

Amen. The guy has had all of the 15 minutes (or I guess it was more like 15 days) of NFL fame to which he is entitled.

I can't help but think that this is good news for the Eagles. I don't know if Kelly was going to be willing to change his system, and I don't think his spread option system translate well to the NFL. McCoy from Denver, Bradley from Seattle, or Roman from San Francisco would all be good choices.

Little Howie really really needed Chip Kelly to sign with the Eagles. Howie must have a coach with zero NFL experience, like Kelly, in order to make himself relevant. A seasoned NFL guy is not interested in hearing Howie's naive ideas.

This is good news. Kelly needs some offensive coordinator experience in the NFL before he is ready to be a prime time NFL head coach. Eagles will probably end up with some position coach and a tale will be spun about how he blew them away with his thumb drive full of simulations and video game results. But maybe they will be "stuck" with Whisenhunt (schooled Reid over and over) or Lovie Smith.

While this guy is an "offensive" genius, haven't we had enough of so-called genius? I am glad we didn't sign this guy, as he has NO NFL experience, and I am sure his act of going for it on 4th down or going for 2 on a whim would get old VERY fast in Philly... Let's either hire a defensive minded coach, or McCoy from Denver, as he has shown he can adapt offenses to the personel he has!

This is good. The three assistants already mentioned, and solid candidates like Lovie are still out there
