Castillo vs. Bowles

POSTED: Thursday, November 15, 2012, 2:00 AM

Todd Bowles has had his hands around the entire Eagles defense for three games now, exactly half as long as Juan Castillo had with the 2012 defense.

There are some interesting comparisons to be made when you put the numbers achieved by each coach's defensive tenure side-by-side. For instance:

♦ Opposing teams are converting third downs at a nearly 50% rate over the last three games. They were under 30% for the first half-dozen games.

♦ Bowles' defense (6.01) is allowing nearly a full yard more per play than Castillo's defense did (5.13).

♦ The last three QBs have completed 75% of their passes (62-82). That goes a long way to contributing to the 7.53 net-yard-per-plass-play number they have put up.

♦ Bowles' defense has as many sacks (7) in three games as Castillo's did in six games ...

♦ ... But Bowles Boys have yet to record an interception. Castillo's Cubbies had seven, although they bundled four of them in the Game 1 escape against the Browns.

The defense's problem is precisely the same as the offense's. Neither side of the ball has a line. There's lots of dazzle on both sides of the ball, but there's not ground. Offense and defense are both built from the inside out. The LINE is the inside!

All that time and effort to say "the defense stinks under both coaches"? Why?

We may be losing more but we are creating more sacks. Why win quietly when you can lose spectacularly? It's better to look good losing than look bad winning.

About this blog

Boop – who goes by Bob Vetrone Jr. when he is undercover or paying bills – has been at the Daily News since 1982, after working for five years at the Philadelphia Bulletin up to its closing. Along with helping to build the sports scoreboards most nights, he has had great input into the papers’ special sports pullouts – March Madness, Broad Street Run, Record Breakers, Greatest Moments – as well as its day-to-day, award-winning event coverage.

A 1980 graduate of North Catholic, he took some evening college courses. Those lasted right up until the first conflict with a Big 5 doubleheader.

His favorite books growing up were the NBA Guide and the Baseball Encyclopedia, which was, for all intents and purposes, the Internet before there was an Internet.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook. Email him at boopstats@phillynews.com.
