Reid staring at the end

Falcons 30, Eagles 17

Reid staring at the end

POSTED: Sunday, October 28, 2012, 4:08 PM

The operating theory, mostly because Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie has said as much, is that Andy Reid awoke Sunday morning with 10 games to save his job. It was the clearest of imperatives. After all of the years, all of the great moments, all of the disappointments, it was to be a final sprint to the finish and then a clear decision.

Now, after a particularly timid abomination -- Falcons 30, Eagles 17 -- there are more questions than answers.

Can it really be?

Nine more weeks.

Nine more weeks?

Until Sunday, the Eagles had never lost the game immediately following the bye week under Reid. Given that, and given the decision to fire defensive coordinator Juan Castillo during the break, the widespread belief was that the Eagles would come back from their short vacation refreshed and re-focused, fully realizing what is at stake. Instead, they arrived in body only. Their hearts and minds were elsewhere. They did not turn over the ball and still got their backsides handed to them.

Defensively, they lacked both cohesion and fire under new coordinator Todd Bowles. Offensively, they got it blocked a little better but still couldn’t score points early, when it mattered. The special teams were the same, except for the punt return team. We don’t know about them because the Falcons never punted until there was 5:35 left in the fourth quarter.

The hearts-and-minds thing is what bears the closest watching. Reid has had exactly one team quit on him in his 14 seasons -- the 2005 team, after all of the Terrell Owens stuff and after quarterback Donovan McNabb got hurt. That team just curled up in the fetal position at the end -- but it was almost understandable, given the post-Super Bowl hangover and everything that happened.

This is different.

Nine more weeks.

Nine more weeks?

The Falcons’ opening drive of the game was the maiden voyage for Bowles: 16 plays and 80 yards; 8 minutes, 44 seconds of having the ball shoved down his defense’s throat. The touchdown pass to Drew Davis featured a blown coverage, just the biggest hint of a permeating confusion. Along the way, a holding penalty on Jason Babin extended the drive.

The Falcons were ahead by seven before a crowd that was two-thirds full had had a chance to be chilled by Hurricane Sandy’s first winds. And they booed. It would be the first time that happened but not the only time.

Did I already say that the Falcons never punted until 5:35 in the fourth quarter?

Along the way, Julio Jones scored Nnamdi Asomugha on a 63-yard touchdown pass, one in which safety Nate Allen made sure he was no possible help by taking a terrible angle on the play. Linebacker Mychael Kendricks did not start the game, reportedly as punishment for being late for a team meeting. A continuing lack of pressure on the quarterback -- despite the team’s first two sacks in about a month -- just opened up the defensive for carving by Atlanta’s Matt Ryan, and that is exactly what happened.

As the game ended, the wind whipped and the rain fell sideways onto nearly-emtpy stadium seats. Most everyone was rushing home to beat the storm; Andy Reid was not nearly so lucky.

Talent-wise this is an 8-8 team at best. You're not going to the playoffs next year either, no matter who replaces Andy

They'll be lucky to get to 8-8! Maybe Tampa and Cinci, maybe split with NFC East? I still a HUGE struggle to make it to .500!

8 -8 seems far fetched. This team is about to melt down. And its going to be ugly.

I was insulted this summer when I said this is a 9-7 team.

    Vick is not that good.
The bar is so low that we celebrate linebackers making tackles. Making tackles does not mean we have elite linebackers.
We can't score in the red zone because our receivers cannot create space.
    Our tight end is overrated.
    Our secondary is overrated.
Our defensive line is junk. Both Babin and Cole are trash.

I may be a tool, but the Birds stink.
Vick and Reid are not good enough to win the Super Bowl.

Lurie won't fire Andy during the season. Who is he going to replace him with? Marty? I don't think so, since the entire coaching staff will probably be gone at the end of the season.
Lurie will wait for the end of the season and then hire a big name like Gruden, Cowher or Dungy. He won't go for an unknown assistant coach this time.

With a No. 1 receiver, McNabb played 15 games (sat out 1 after clinching division), completed 300 of 469 passes for 3,875, 64% completion, averaging 8.26 yards per pass, 31 TDs/8 Ints. For 104.6 Qb rating.
The question was asked whether the bigger problem was Reid or McNabb. The fact is that neither has done anything. The difference is that Donovan, a worn-out vet fighting father time, was sent to a team in disarray, while Reid was given a "Dream Team (TWICE)," complete with new coaches, players and schemes. I THINK WE HAVE AN ANSWER.

I have come to believe that our exotic schemes on offense and defense are a hindrance. The Mudd and Washburn way of doing things are working against us.

Just one more Reid blunder. He's his own worse enemy.

I actually feel badly for Reid. He's been a good coach and has tried to do things the right way. And, dealing with his son dying in training camp is absolutely brutal. That said, however, his time is up and he'll clearly be gone after this season. I say bring in Gruden or, better yet, Cowher. Let the new coach decide on the QB.

The Tonner asked before the season how this team was going to be better missing its best cornerback and their best offensive lineman. The Tonner thinks we have the answer. The Dream Team dynasty is done before it even started. All hype team? Check. All talk team? You betcha. Salary cap bowl? Indeed. No wonder the trophy case at that upholstered toilet, the Linc, is empty. Get to work Jeff. Time to find a new leader. Please don't let Howie make the call, get a real football guy. Whether you like it or whether you don't like it, learn to love it because it's the truth according to the Tonner and it's the best thing going today.

If Vick is worth a 100 million dollar contract, I guess that makes Matt Ryan a billionaire. Anyway, I agree with you. This entire team is terrible, no heart whatsoever. I actually fell asleep sometime in the 3rd quarter. See Andy that's how you adjust on gameday!

The Eagles scored their usual 17 points, but their new defense looked even worse than the prior one. So nothing's changed. I guess we shouldn't expect any changes until Reid and Vick are replaced. I hope that's sooner than later.

Bill Polian. Wouldn't have minded that Ryan Gribson guy either, he seems to be another smart guy we let get away. Either way this era of Eagle football has lasted long enough. I'd like to see Lurie sell the team so we can hit the reset button. New ownership, new coaches, new quarterback, new attitude... better future. hmm, got me thinking. I wish someone would run political style tv ads all over philly/nj condemning Reid/Lurie as failures, undeserving of another year. That would be hilarious!

Unless Lurie pulls the trigger on Reid before the season ends, just ride it out and know Reid's 14-year reign is coming to a close. This team has checked out physically and mentally playing for a lame duck coach that has lost the respect in the locker room. Nice job by Asomugha getting torched all game after questioning the play calling against the Lions. What a bust.

It was the worst defensive efforts I have ever seen from the Eagles, and I go back to 1960! Ray Rhodes' teams looked better! Andy needs to either hang it up or get canned. Vick needs to be put on the oak in favor of Foles. At least he will get rid of the ball faster.

The Eagles players quit on their coach. Time to move on and begin the process of rebuilding. It'll probably be 6 years before the Eagles play a meaningful game and contend for a playoff position.

the Question now is whether Lurie will have the desire to keep the team in Philly through the loosing that a major shake up will being. LA is building a new Stadium, Lurie is a Football guy, seems a match made in heaven given some of the lucrative benefits cities are offering teams to relocate.

I seriously doubt the Linc see sell outs through a rebuilding process in Philly. After all the NFL is a business. Ask the Baltimore Colts and original Cleveland Browns.

Who will be your scrapegoat this week Andy ? This is a team playing for a lame duck coach, they brought in people who have no team character and just want to cash in a pay check. Lurie sell this team, you know what you can do with your gold standard, it's called fools gold. I've been off the Reid band wagon for a long time my love of the Eagles keeps me interrested. I would love to see them start new with a good football operation but with Lurie owning this team it will be more of the same but a different face running the show.

I don't expect miracles, but seeing Laurie take some action would be something. I get tired of hearing announcers saying how the D-line is the strength of the team, yet they haven't gotten pressure for four weeks in a row now! The Wide 9 nonsense was a fluke last year and now offenses know how to defeat it. Going to be long season!

With the replacement of Eagles Defensive Coordinator Juan Castillo all of the problems of the Eagles have clearly and decisively been solved. With new DC Todd Bowles at the helm, the defense put in their best performance of the year against the Falcons, holding that offense to just one punt in the first 55 minutes of play. The outstanding performance of the revamped and improved Eagles defense had a positive impact on the Eagles offense, an offense that has struggled to put up points in previous weeks, but succeeded to get within a single field goal of 20 points. The Eagles are riding high. Riding high, like really uncomfortable pants, pants with a too-tight inseam. After a wedgie.

Another heartless performance. The defense basically played the entire 1st Qtr- I think the Offense ran 5 plays. So by halfway thru the 2nd Qtr, the D is gassed.
I still don't understand how BAD the O Line is. I have never seen so many defensive players in the back field SO fast. Shady and Vick can only run for their lives.....

The Eagles could easily be 0-7. Too bad they pulled out last minute wins vs. Cleveland, Baltimore and NYG or Andy would be fired now.

It is past time for a completely new regime: new head coach, coordinators, and a GM who can actually evaluate and draft talent, especially on the O line and defense.

Reid can't motivate and pull the strings anymore to get his players performing at a high level. He pulled it all out the last four games last year to save his job...now his motivation is tuned out, does not work anymore. He knows it too. His last futile step was to put Bowles in as a different voice...not working either. Its done. Over.

I'm usually one of the positive ones on this thread, but that was a horrible display. Vick is my favorite player in the league, but that offense played scared out there. I don't remember us throwing deep at all...which is supposed to be what we do best. Cut Vick loose and let him do his thing...picks turnovers f it. Let him loose MM and AR...and let the rest of the players loose too. They look scared out there. No fire at all!!

It's funny that people think Reid is definitely going to be fired. The Eagles, no matter how bad they looked today and to start the season, will not finish 3-13. They'll find a way to win 5 or 6 more games, get close enough to smell playoff contention—perhaps even squeak in—and Reid will be brought back because the team will be on the "uptick". Unless they tank the season I'd be stunned if Lurie fires Reid now (especially if he benches Vick and does reasonably well with Foles).

Writing comments on the internet and screaming on the radio is not going to change anything. Eagles fans...you want to make Jeffrey Lurie take notice? STOP going to the games and STOP watching on TV. If their stadium is empty, and their TV ratings fall, things WILL change. Until that happens Jeffrey Lurie has absolutely no reason to upset the gravy train because you guys continually support this team and line its owner's pockets.

Both Falcons corners are playing 10 yards off of our receivers - throw the 5 yards slants for heaven's sake! That's how you set up the double move which Asante bites on all the time. Our safeties are an embarrassment, both can't tackle and Coleman bites on anything remotely resembling play action.

Vick is one of the most overrated player in NFL history -- consistently bad for 10 yrs except for one 3 to 4 game stretch in 2010... while McNabb was mediocre to decent and was overrated for being considered "good", Vick is simply not an NFL caliber qb, and never has been, and it's amazing how the press picks its celebrities like this (and another no-talent like Barry O. to run the country) without regard to their consistent failure to accomplish anything ever ..while today's game was a team effort, it's still absurd that the coach 3 yrs ago thought he could buid a team around an undersized thrower with no ability to read a defense or make any intelligent decisions (just like the incompetent running the country)

This was painful to watch. The thing that bothered me the most was that I saw no fire or passion from the players. It seemed like they were not motivated at all to play today. The offense is stagnant and the defense was abysmal. In addition to getting their butts handed to them, the defense had a chance to make several plays that could have turned the momentum around and just like in previous games they failed to make a play. I think the Andy Reid era is almost officially over. I hope Vick gets to go to a team that runs the ball, as he is more of a play action type quarterback and not a west coast one.

The incompetence of Reid reminds me of the incompetence of the Bush Administration. sure, Reid didn't start two illegal wars that killed nearly a million people, or destroy our economy, and destroy the lives of women, children, minorities, the elderly, and gays, but the analogy is still almost perfect. Reid blamed the minority Castillo, just like the Republicans blame the black President because he is black. A vote for Romney is a vote for hatred, bigotry, and a vote of approval for Andy Reid and the Eagles performance today.

This is not good. So many problems, making changes on the fly. Let Vick be a mobile quarterback and move around a little bit. He is not a pocket passer. Having him standing there is an abomination. What is the worst that can happen?

I don't think the 2005 team necessarily quit on Reid because of the whole T.O. fiasco. They just lacked the talent to get it done due to injuries. As mentioned, McNabb went on IR...but so did Lito Sheppard at the same time as McNabb, then Westbrook in December, while Pinkston went on IR in training camp. The backup quarterbacking was poor. Despite that and blowout losses like against Seattle, the Eagles still won a December game on the road against the Rams - a game that would not be won by a team who quit and also beat the Packers minus T.O. and McNabb. Also played hard in both games against the Giants despite losing. I think 2005 was just an unfortunate abberation of injuries and that's why they finished 6-10.

Last time I checked, the Falcons were undefeated and had the best record in the NFL. They're a very talented offensive team that executed brilliantly today. It's not like we lost to a bunch of bums. That said, we have yet to perform to out abilities on offense, and the defense can't pressure the QB to save their lives.

Where to start after that game....yes we have had a few blowouts but this game showed a dispirited team and coaches that did nothing to prepare them. During the game we did nothing to adjust...and over time showed the whole team had quit...and also their coaches. It was such a discombobulated mess...that I am not sure how anyone, new coach, new players can put this team back into a semblance of a football team. Watching this game was so painful...I thought it was a big league team playing a single A team.....maybe worse. Can anyone make this team one that cares and wants to play football?

One thing that has concerned me...I am worried that the Eagles and some of their players are being called names that show misplaced anger. What a player or coach has had happen In their lives is different from what happens on the field. It is insensitive at best that I see posts about drugs and Andy, dog killing and Vick. The pain that AR has probably had with his sons and one dying is unimaginable to me. That some people take advantage of this to cast anger at his work as a coach is even more unimaginable. Vick's transgressions are not related to his playing football. The only one to judge him is some person higher than we mortals. Vicks play has not been good...but we cannot pass judgement on his past.

Watching this team has been awful, dreadful, impossible....but it does not give us license to be mean spirited.

    Two things

    1. I don't remember who wrote the article, but one of the Philly.com writers said that Jim Johnson was good because he understood that the main thing was limiting the other team to 17 points or less. That's what other teams seem to be able to do to us.

    2. I don't think Reid is doing a good job. But - and this isn't an excuse - I don't know how good a job I'd be able to do after losing my son to a heroin overdose.

If things continue as they have, Lurie won't need to fire him. I think he'll resign. Not soon, but before he gets the axe.

    In my opinion.

The problem really isn't Andy the coach. It's Andy the talent evaluator / personnel guy. Taking guys like Fred-ex over Reggie Wayne, LJ Smiff instead of Witten, putting Vick in this system, etc. He's actually going to go down as a great coach when we look back at the era, just a frustration level that he couldn't get over the hump. Vick was his biggest mistake, the guy just cannot see the field. He scrambles backwards and sideways, all over he place except stepping up in the pocket. The injuries to 3 starters on the O-line will not allow the offense to be consistent, and the "special" teams are inept. I hope they go in a solid direction with an experienced NFL coach, but I doubt Gruden will leave that Cush gig on TV. Maybe Jay Gruden though.....he's putting up numbers with sub par talent in Cincy... His system would allow Shady to flourish....

Some words that best describe the 2012 Eagles: Talentless, Predictable, Undisciplined, Heartless, Indecisive, Stupid, Unprepared, Over-whelmed, Passive, Mis-managed, Listless, Bumbling, Leaderless, Over-rated, Over-paid, Dysfunctional, Hopeless, Helpless, and Dillusional. Given the fact that Andy Reid is still the Coach of this mess of a team, I purposely reserved the word "CLUELESS" exclusively for the Owner, who's acceptance of repeated failure is a slap in the face to Philly Fans!

I don't think they quit on Reid yet, I think they quit on Mike Vick leading the team. Andy's got one move left this season, the sooner the better. D stunk it up, but the offense again scored <20. Every player would rally around a rookie QB too, make the move.

Since they rid themselves of the last Rhodes player here (BDAWK), they also got rid of their last leader. What player has Reid drafted or picked up in free agency that's been able to show any leadership ability like a BDawk, a Trotter, a Vincent. Special teams used to have Ike Reese, an ALL -Pro. Is there anyone resembling that type of player on special teams now? It's a pathetic mix of me first talented players, that look for excuses on why they lose. And Andy chose those players.

Why can't Andy Reid see that he has simply chosen the wrong quarterback his entire reign. mcnabb, vick.... The best I have seen andy reid is with Jeff Garcia and Ty Detmer. It is not a race thing.... The offense cannot be run by inaccurate, indecisive QBs. It requires great timing and precision. How can he not see this????????!!!!!!!!!

This is all about the owner - Jeff Lurie. He made the biggest mistake of anyone associated with this team - he allowed Andy Reid to have full control of all personnel decisions. That has never worked - in any sport. There has to be somebody who can overrule Reid when he makes a bad decision such as hiring Castillo or keeping Vick. Andy will land on his feet in another city, but he will never ever have full control over a team....something his ego probably can't handle.

Absolutely dead on correct. You have to be a naive fool to think the drug legacy that Reid carries should be separated from the team's performance over many years. In fact Reid has now had two chances to resign (or at least take a sabbatical the first time) like a man with his horrendous family issues. He has the team hire a felon with a drug dealing and weapons record who repeatedly failed rehabilitation. He has indeed and instead stuffed his wallet, which is what this whole travesty is about.

Putting in their rookie QB would be a huge mistake as this depleted offensive line would get him killed. At least Vick is mobile enough to get away.

The two biggest problems with Reid have been: (1) no ability to draft defensive talent. Rhodes drafted 4 pro-bowlers in 4 years, and Reid has drafted 4 pro-bowlers in 14 years, with Rhodes also picking more multiple pro-bowlers (Dawkins, Trot). Don't get me started on undersized linemen. (2) Reid's game-day coaching consistently loses games he should win given the talent level. This showed up in losing NFC championship games he should have won back in the day, and losing regular season games now with an average team.

I find it ironic that one of his strengths, building strong O-Lines, is a big part of his downfall this year. Regardless, he has to go. Winning 1 NFC Championship in 14 years with only 16 teams in the conference is not beating the odds ... it is the odds.

Removing Castillo did nothing. Nate Allen is a liability and should be benched ASAP. Nahmdi should be on a short leash. The offense showed improvement with varied plays but that did not start until the second series. The first series was typical Eagles- pass , telegraphed run, pass, punt. Why can't they establish a power run game? The Falcons biggest weakness was their run D and the Eagles still decided to pass first to open the run. Play calling, although improved is not good enough. This team is sad. They need a QB, a O coordinator, two safeties, a new D tackle. Keep Herrimans, Foles, Peters, Cox, Ryan, Kelce, Celek and DRC- blow the rest up. I always supported Big Red but the lack of run game variety sucks. Adios Reid.

It's going to be very surprising if Andy somehow finds a way to come back next year. Short if winning almost all of the remaining games, I just don't see it happening. Vick isn't back either way unless they've completely lost their minds. Instead of deluding themselves they might as well see what they have in Foles now. This is like so many other Eagles teams of recent years: Over-hyped going into the season and mediocre or worse when it comes to actually playing the games. They're just not a good team and you can put most of the blame on Andy Reid. It's time to turn that page.

No reason to make it personal. Every head coach has a run and then moves on. Andy Reid did something special for the first half of his run. I hate to see him unwind this way, but I doubt he will finish the season. I think the one who has lost the most though is Vick. Reid never put him in a good position to win and he paid the price with hit after hit. He made a clear effort to change his game but no one could win with a line that changes every game and can not protect anyone. Reid has done too little running to protect Vick and open chances for him. Coaches never quit because of the money, but Andy should consider moving on.

McNabb who was called out by T.O,. The truth got Owens banished. Who ever said Reid was a good coach? He hid behind the great defensive schemes of Jimmy J.Can't coach D, offense with McNabb and Vick is predictable, so What does he do?

Lurie would never fire Reid during the season. Even if he would, the only guy you go with is someone on the current staff, and his assistants are more incompetent than he is. He'll have to wait until New Years Day, hopefully when he starts his presser with all of the great reasons to fire the idiot he won't conclude that he should keep him anyway, like he did last year.

Lurie is a good owner. He put his football people in charge of football, assembled a strong front office with Banner and stayed the hell out of the way. His now ex-wife completely overstepped her bounds and role, but hey, he had to appease his wife right? Then last year's whopping mistakes were made. 1. Howie Roseman GM? Seriously? He is a fantasy football league guy at best. 2. Danny Watkins, 1st round pick? A 26 year old fireman from Manitoba with 3 years of football under is belt is your first pick when you need SO much more? 3. Juan Castillo moves from offensive line coach to d-coordinator. Who the hell would make that move??? These moves were really, bad and cost the team dearly this year, but honestly they have been heading down since Jim Jackson died...It is time to move on from Andy. Thanks for the memories. I disagree with hiring a Gruden or Cowher or Dungy....

I agree with the others that say it wouldn't help to fire Reid now. Who would you replace him with? Marty is his partner in game planning and play calling futility. It's obvious Bowles didn't bring out the best in anyone. Play Foles and make sure he's the guy for 2013 and start recruiting Gruden or Cowher now. Andy has no one to blame but himself for this. His arrogance led him to the Castillo debacle. It also led him to ignore chemistry and character, which this team has little of either.

Lets get serious folks. Look at the eagles roster compared to the NFC east. Only Mycoy and DRC would start for any other NFC team. Maybe Maclin and Ryan could start for the redskins. Every offensive lineman on this team would be a backup on any other NFC east team. Babin and Cole and Graham are washed up shells. All of the safety's wouldn't even make the 53 of most teams. Andy, this is your mess. When the Bus of angry eagles fans with pitchforks and torches comes by, do the right thing and throw yourself under it.

I'm more concerned about out GM situation more than I am head coach. We need checks and balances. You give one guy a key to the entire city and things can only go wrong. It was nice seeing Dallas lose lost night, but I couldn't help but wonder why in the world we passed him over for Graham. I like Graham and all, but not as a pick before JPP....and yes, many saw his talent before the draft, so this isn't just hindsight.

About this blog
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles. E-mail Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com Reach Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com.
