Eagles lose a terrible game

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- This is a game the Eagles always seem to lose: on the road, against an AFC team with some credentials, just before the bye. It is something we have seen several times during Andy Reid's tenure. There is no explaining it, just like there is no explaining why their Septembers are always so unstable, and why they always win the game right after the bye, and why they play like crazy in November and December. It is just part of the annual cycle.

And, well, for a long time on Sunday, this one looked like a win -- until, that is, it turned into one of the ugliest Eagles losses in recent memory. Titans 37, Eagles 19 will live in infamy -- at least through the upoming bye week. Cortland Finnegan's 41-yard interception return for a touchdown with no time remaining was the final indignity.

Quarterback Kevin Kolb wasn't playing well when trying to throw the ball downfield, but the running game and the short passing game were solid, and kicker David Akers was money after a tough day the previous weekend against Atlanta. On defense, the Eagles' No. 1 job was to stop Tennessee running back Chris Johnson -- and for the third straight game, the defense did just that against an opposing back.

It wasn't going to be pretty, not even a little, but the Eagles were going to win. But then the Eagles fumbled away the touchdown that would have put them ahead by 23-7 in the third quarter when the Titans' Jason Jones blew through the Eagles' line and disrupted the handoff between Kolb and LeSean McCoy just 3 yards from the end zone. And then Titans backup quarterback Kerry Collins began to find the only player on the field who could beat the Eagles -- wide receiver Kenny Britt.

With about 13 minutes left, and with the Eagles' pass rush flagging, Collins hit Britt with an 80-yard touchdown pass, a play on which rookie safety Nate Allen did not react well. (Britt had caught a 26-yard TD already in the second quarter against the beleagured Ellis Hobbs.) But after that it was pitch and catch, and then pitch and catch again, and again, and again -- and the Eagles had no answer. With 5:03 left, Collins hit Britt with another touchdown pass, this one from 16 yards.

By the time it was over, Britt had seven catches for 225 yards. He had been benched early in the game because of a bar altercation during the week, and when he arrived, it was like lightning.

For the third week in a row, the Eagles' offensive game plan was excellent. The screen game was working, the run game was consistent, and there were enough people open downfield. This week, though, Kolb had trouble with the deep ball. He was intercepted once and could have been picked off for a second time if not for a play made by wide receiver Riley Cooper, a play of the year candidate.

Out of the wildcat formation, the Eagles ran a kind of double-reverse thing: direct snap to Jeremy Maclin, to Shady McCoy, to Kolb (who had been lined up wide), and then deep down the middle to Cooper. Except the pass was badly underthrown, and the Titans' Chris Hope was a certain interceptor until Cooper made a great comeback break to snag the pass in front of Hope. Thirty-seven yards, no sweat. A couple of plays later, Cooper made his first NFL touchdown reception, a 5-yarder from Kolb.

But the offense stalled, badly, in the second half. Kolb did nothing to cement his position as the starter in the Kolb-Michael Vick sweepstakes. And a young team that could have burnished its credentials with a win against a backup quarterback on the road instead will deal with the awful taste of this one for 2 weeks.

Burning all 3 timeouts way to early again and then none to use for a challenge. I don't think I can watch this team anymore unless Reid is gone.

This is really a bad bad bad loss because the Eagles had the Titans buried until the fumble. Right then and there is where the Eagles lost the game. I don't think we have any of our other teams playing this weekend so the nightmare is over.

Wow what a awful game.. Where is the Kevin Kolb that played the Falcons. That Kolb was accurate and on point. This Kolb today was under throwing the ball big time.

Defense went from having a A game to a F game. Too many mistake today.

Gold standard! How many weeks/years will we have to deal with Reid not putting his players in position to win? How many years will we watch wide receivers over six feet tall destroy us?

The Eagles have no heart as they quit! The Offense needs to be run by Vick. Kolb is the second coming of King Hill. The Defense sucks along with special teams. I loved the effort on the inception. People need to be benched and I am thinking of Allen and Hobbs and Kolb.

Of course Field Goal Andy helped out by his lack of stones in going for a TD 4 freaking times. Keep it close enough to sell merchandise, that's the Eagles mission statement.

I said all week they would not win this game. Best team in the NFC ?? 60% passing is TOTAL GARBAGE and you see how bad it stinks against goods defenses, especillay in the playoffs. you can beat garbage teams with garbage but not the best teams. 60% has NEVER win a SB for a reason. Reid will NEVER win a SB. EVER. GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEADS BECAUSE ANDY NEVER WILL.

There should be no QB controversy in 2 weeks. Is anybody out there still drinking the Kevin Kolb Kool-Aid. Tell him that it's OK to run for a fist down. We need a seance to bring back Jim Johnson. He would have kept Sheldon Brown. Ellis Hobbs sucks. Riley Cooper is a bright spot on a dark day. Phillies and now the Eagles. It's back to the regular Philadelphia sports scene. It was nice while it lasted!

I forgot to mention, even thought we were in the lead, the game was kind of boring and than it got to the point were I became amaze how well Kevin Britt almost single handily tore our secondary apart. How about Samuel head face down tackle. That was horrible. What a terrible weekend, first the Phillies and this game. At least the weather was nice.

Reid just took responsibility for not putting guys in better position to stop K. Britt. Sad! This team is just sad. They're going to "continue to work" and "make plays" in the future. Sad! Reid must go.

Normally post anti Reid, game calling and talent. Not today. Kevin K put work in. The Defense played one h'la game for the most part. Tough loss, no. This young Team will take from this. The game is won after the clock ticks to "0"...

Secondary. Hobbs was TERRIBLE. He has 14 points to account for in this game. If a drunk and so-called racist from Penn State can do you with regularity, your days are numbered.

Kolb will kill defenses that can't pressure the QB. But you throw in a good defensive line or windy conditions and his weak arm can't get the job done. Get some TDs in all those Red Zone possessions and the game is over before the fumble.

It ain't Kolb.............maybe some blocking would help, but all in all maybe the coaching staff could teach playing "smart." There are so many dumb penalties our heads reel, "off sides by a CB, you gotta be kidding me, and in the middle by a LB.........cripes. And maybe inform the o line that tackling an onrushing lineman is a no no. Chalk this one up to Hobbs, though.

Not sure how this was Kolb's fault. I place the blame quarely on the defense.

Eagles pass defense has been absolutely abysmal all year. Of course they're going to get lit up by a half decent receiver with something to prove.

Hobbs does suck hard though. We need to clear out these Patriot's sloppy second cornerbacks and get some actual talent.

Kolb is not the second coming of King Hill. He's the second coming of Norm Snead. I remember that the fans cheered whenever King Hill or Jack Concannon came in for Snead.

Next step -- Use the bye week to say bye-bye to defensive uncoordinator Sean McDoormat and special teams coach Bobby April Fool.

Kolb is on offensive he doesn't need to defend the K.Britt. But I defense left the game after the fumble. And going 3 and out back to back drives would put the QB stats down.

Kolb went from Player of the Week to the bench. He had great field position all day, overthrew wide open receivers often, under threw every deep ball, did nothing in the red zone, owes Riley Cooper BIG TIME on another awful pass, still lead receivers into hits, threw the ball up for INT rather than take sack so he gave ball back to Tenny after fumble [rookie mistake], three yard passes on 3rd and 8, and that last pick six was a perfect example of why others call him baby arm. What a duck that was. Awful performance and the rest of the team quit too. Making Collins look like an all-pro again was pathetic.

Can anyone explain why we have to watch #31 week after week after week turn to toast? Hobbs can't play, and it's evident to even the most casual observer. Every year, the Eagles fail to replace a veteran they let walk (Trotter, Dawkins, and now, Sheldon Brown). Hobbs is pathetic, and after every big pass play week in and week out, the camera follows #31 as he trails 3-5 yards behind the receiver streaking downfield with an easy grab. Enough already. HEY, ANDY, HOBBS CAN'T PLAY!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Reid's pass-happy offense did us in again. Against the 49ers and Falcons, Reid averaged 52% running.

27 runs, 31 passes against the Niners
38 runs, 29 passes against Falcons

Even if you throw out 16-19 runs at the end of the Falcons game, Reid passed only 54% of the time. With such success, why would he throw 74% of the time with a 9-point lead?

jjthree.. I had faith in Kolb but really come on... how many badly thrown long balls di he have today... he is NOT a deep ball QB.. Never has been and never will be.. Our receiving corps has too much down range speed for Kolbs weak arm.. It was excruciating to watch how Kolb missed so many chances with that we all know that Vick would have made with ease!!

I think if Britt would have reached 300 yards, Reid would have put someone other than Hobbs on him. Under 300 he saw no reason to make an adjustment.

This is why people don't appreciate the winningest coach in franchise history. He won't allow it. Everytime we start to, he sends us a reminder. This was just like watching Justice give up 15 sacks against the Giants.

Andy Reid has to go. This guy has no idea of field management, and where are his guru's in drafting and signing these DB's. This whole defensive backfield is getting burned by receiver's like Tennessee's Kenny Britt. The only weapons this team has are Britt and running back Chris Johnson. Terrible coaching job by Reid and Company.

i am not sold on McDermutt. Three examples. First, Ellis Hobbs is too small , too slow to cover big fast receivers and is by far, the biggest liability in the secondary. Second, Antonio Dixon is a clear upgrade over Broderick Bunkley, yet McDermutt and Co. were starting Bunk. i rest my case. Third, Moises Foukou is clearly better than Akeem Jordan, yet Foukou had to fight his way on the field. After Dixon and Foukou start, stopping the run is no longer an issue. i would hope the the film study over the bye week, eliminates Hoobs as the starter. Trevard Lindley, preferably, is better. Can't be worse. Ellis Hobbs you stink.

This loss was not Kolbs fault. It was clearly the inability of the coaching staff to make a defensive adjustment.

This game did expose Kolbs weakness though, and that is the one positive I take from this game. No more contraversy, its Vicks job.

I just wonder if the defense will ever be the same after that. Reid allowed the Titans to take their heart.

I would normally call for Reids head, but I know he'll get them turned around and make me look like an ungrateful brat.

Someone should definitely be fired after that though. Sean McDermot? Dick Jauron? Ellis Hobbs.. Fire someone please.

elijah29, I was all for giving Kolbjob his chance and said so. He beat a winless team, beat a decent team and then reverted to what I thought he was, a back up. If not for Riley Cooper, no TDs at all today. Kolb did nothing the entire second half. I'm sick of him running away from the LOS at a 45 degree angle and then throwing off his back foot. He went from his best game to the bench and this loss was squarely on him with a big assist from the D. When we needed him he played small and that's just what the complaints were about McNabb except Kolb was cr@ppy for the entire game to boot, not just when the Titans were coming back. The Kolbettes will recede back into their holes, the pom poms will be off to get dry cleaned because they won't be needed against Indy with Vick playing. And have you noticed a conspicuous silence from one of the regulars? I believe the last thing wiff was heard saying was Eagles 27, Titans 17, Kevin Kolb 300 yds and 3 TDs. That was after a week of crowing about Player of the Week BS. Player of the Weak is more like it. Awful display of QBing and that pick six was icing on the cake. Back to the bench KK, time for Vick again.

    CAN WE MOVE ON NOW!!!!

KOLB IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE A BACK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every deep pass he threw today, was UNDERTHROWN!!!
He should of had 4 INT's today, if it wasn't for the titan DB'S drops. The one deep throw kolb did complete, should have been pick off, if it weren't for the tight end fighting for the ball.

kolb is fool's gold!!! You better hope, kolb is not the quarterback for the next five years or the eagle's will be drafting in the top ten, the next five YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LISTEN, THERE IS NOOOOOOOOOOOO QB CONTROVERSY.

It was time for Mcnabb to go, so it's not kolb fault on that subject, but kolb is not the QB for this team, if you want to be a contender.

Kolb can't handle the pressure of being a QB in Philly. you'll see, once Vick leaves, next year to get his own team, ya'll REGRET IT!!!!

Funny how when Kolb plays terrible or loses it's all the defenses fault or it was windy, or the offensive line sucks, or Avant should have caught that pass. But when Mcnabb had bad games it was entirely his fault. They would say "trade him he sucks". Mcnabb did have games where he shared most of the blame, but it seemed like evertime we lost it was his fault. One game that I'd say wasn't his fault but everyone blames him for is the NFC championship game against Arizona. He played amazing football in the second half and had one of his best performances as an eagle. Brought the eagles back from 24-6 after the defense was torched. Took the lead 25-24. And the defense gave it right back. After the game everyone blamed Mcnabb for the loss.

Just saying. Stop making excuses for Kolb.

Reid has got to have pictures of Jeff Lurie in compromising positions with farm animals or something-that is the only reason I can come up with for the fat idiot still having a job as a head coach in the NFL.
Thanks for a great most of the season, Phils! And just think, in 5 months or so, the Flyers games will start to count!

yo eagles were winning this game 19-10 with 13 mins left in the forth! Kolb didn`t miss the block that caused the fumble at the 3!kolb didn`t have 10 penalaties! Kolb didn`t fumble the punt !!Kolb was not playin corner when kenny britt caught 3tds in the forth!! Fact is Kevin kolb throw some bad deep balls today!! And one pick witch he was hit in the first half !! Did not decide game! and the second pick with 9 seconds left meant nothing !!!Gee didn`t kolb hit Mcahlin with a 20 yard pass with about 3min left on second down that he flat out dropped!!!I expect Keven Kolb to have some bad games !! He`s only had 6-7 starts!!!But to have ur defense flat out collapse !!! Please stop blaming the QB !! It just shows how ingorant some fans on this site are including the writters!!!

There was nothing tough at all in this loss to a superiour team, playing a backup QB? The Eagles aren't a good team, at all. The NFC East is mediocre, and the Eagles will be lucky to finish 7-9. This was a step up in competition and they got killed.....nothing tough about it.

Last weekend was one of the best in Philly sports history. This weekend goes down as the worst. The Eagles had this game and then just gave it away. It looked like they were on their way to a giant victory and then just flushed it down the commode. There is no excuse for a loss like this. On top of that, the Phillies lose to an inferior team in the NLCS.

This is a bad football team, and it's not Kolb's fault....they're not good, and the NFC East is a poor division. They'll be lucky to finish 7-9....right now I can't see 3 more wins in their remaining schedule.

All i know is i actually watch the game !!! Unlike some of you wannabees ! Kevin Kolb did not play well today and he missed some throws down field-but by on means did he lose this game !! Lets get the facts straight here this team was winning this game with 13 mins left in the 4th ! And had the ball on the titans 3yd line when the O-line forgot to block the DT causing that fumble !!Did Kolb fumble the punt return! Was kolb playing corner!!!please you guys are a joke !Kolb had a sub par game ! But was he called for 10 penalities!! On second down with 3-4 mins left did kolb dropped the 20 yard pass that hit him in the numbers no! Macklin did!!!I expect kolb to have bad games but to have ur defense collapse when the offense controls the ball most of the game ! And samuals and hobbs got taken to school !!!

Lets face it, Kevin didnt loose this game, but he contributed a lot to the loss. Defense has no heart and they definately let down everyone. Ellis Hobbs sucks. Kevin, come on man, dogs chase cars because they want to drive, doesnt translate that just because you want to play doesnt mean we should let you when we do not have to...we will never win if you cant improve at 3rd down and in the red Zone...dink and dunk football is a thing of the past.

Pjsroom, Kevin did nothing in 2nd half, his pick at the end padded the scoreline, just like the one at the end of teh first half...stop with the excuses. Kevin won matches which he did not make any mistakes, his obviously not ready, the more confidence he plays with the worse he looks...reset, sign Vick and Kafka. Mcnabb and Kolb both needed to have gone.

tpizza , Player of the Weak, I liked that.Kolb wasn't bad the 1st half, unfortuanately there is a 2nd half. However, I'm not totally blaming Kolb today, as it looks like some are. The turning point was that fumble on the Titans 2 yard line, which wasn't his fault. Then the defense let the Titans out of that hole and it was all down hill. I had posted weeks ago, if I was an offensive coordinator in this league, I would throw to Hobbs side all day long. He's terrible. I don't know what the other Eagles opponents where thinking when they played them.

This whole debacle was a team effort. Subpar play from Kolb. Pathetic play from the secondary. Atrocious lack of coaching from mcdermott. Undisciplined play. Ultimately, it's all on reid. He's the one who hand picked these coaches and is responsible for team discipline and preparation. Anyone who believes reid will take us to the promise land is a ukn fool.

Hi watsonmr, and before I forget, thanks for the Reid/Vick timeline correction last week. My bad. Kudos to you. I am having a little fun at the Kolbettes expense but today I was not impressed with Kolb at all. First half included. Even some of his good plays were lucky [Cooper] and his passing was off all day, not just his deep ball, everything. He missed Celek and Maclin when they were wide open and did little with excellent field position. The Cooper play should have been another pick. The D did stink in the 2nd but that's when they needed Kolb to stabilize the team and he flat out failed. That was Reid's fault in part for not running when he should have. Amazes me the success they have with a balanced attack and then we go right back to the same old BS play calling. Perhaps we shouldn't over react to this game the same way the Kolbettes over reacted to the Falcon game? Still think that Vick matches up better with our WRs too and that final pick six is a perfect example of what I mean. That pass was WAAAAAY off target like most of his longer passes. Either way, no way Vick isn't back in 2 weeks as the starter.

Going after KK or Hobbits is missing the point - this game was another brutal example of the undisciplined nature of this team. And the blame for that all comes down to one guy - Big Red. When will Lurie realize that there is not much here to salvage in keeping Wally the Walrus around - the Defense gave up in the second half, time management was appalling, totally stupid penalties (including a sideline penalty by the 3rd string QB), defensive ends practicing their future pro-wrestling moves on opposing QB's, missed blocking assignment leading to a crucial fumble? Blaming KK or Hobbits alone is a bit excessive - yeah they stunk up the place but the whole team down to a man appeared to be on different pages than what the game was planned for. Sloppy individual play on both sides led up to those key situations and the Titans capitalized. How long Mr Lurie, how long must we endure this level of amateurism before you send the message it will no longer be tolerated?

nixman101: I agree that he has some problems but the folks that ranted until 5 was gone have to understand that if he ever proves to be a decent QB it will take a year or two (or 3?). The loss was not his fault. The numbers show the Iggs won everything but the game and he did well enough for where he is right now. The 'D' was a sieve in the 2nd half because we do not - can not adjust to anything. It is talent that's lacking.

When is the bean counter Lurie going to open his eyes and realize Andy Greed is never going to coach this team to a super bowl? McDermut has to be one of the worst D-coordinators in the league as well. I'm tired of these small defenses. When was the last time this defense has put a complete dominate game together? Stupid penalties on 3rd downs giving the other teams a new set of downs happen about 4 times per game. This is all on Andy Reid. The same mistakes week after week.

This has been the most entertaining message board to date. Dave Letterman would do good to take some of the one liners from here for his Top Ten:

When Kerry Collins looks like Tom Brady, it's time to pack it in.
Is there anybody out still drinking the Kevin Kolb Kool-Aid?
We need a seance to bring back Jim Johnson.
Easy to complete 73.3% of passes, when checking down is 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th read in progression.
Kolb is the second coming of Norm Snead.
Great game by Kolb, only 2 picks and a major lack of cajones.
    Fire McIdoit!!!
Our receiving corp has too much down speed for Kolb's weak arm.
Can't wait until after he bye when we see a real QB throw some bombs.
Why don't we tell China they can have Philadelphia and California and we'll call it even!
Mike Vick is going to slide now. Thank God!
This game was A Tale of Two Backups, and Old Yeller came out victorious.
Hey when Kolb gets a full week to practice with the 1st team...oh wait we used that one already.
Kevin come on man, dogs chase cars because they want to drive.
wait now back to reality...clock struck midnight on Kolbrella.

I seen Ernie Sims make 2 hard hits today... on his own players. Did anyone else catch it. On one, he hit Samuel with a forearm to the back of the head; Samuel had to go out a play. The other, the play was stopped and he came out of nowhere and ran into his own lineman, knocking him down. He's a real piece of work.

We are going to have some growing pains. Learning how to win in the NFL takes some experience. We need anothe CB. Nate needs to tighten up and learn, he's a rook. Let's see after the bye. We might find Patterson starting. Maybe Lindey. At least we have learned when to pull Hobbs. We never pulled Brown no matter how much he stunk. He stunk like baked beans both Dallas games last year. Yea bring in the hungry player at the CB position. Hobbs, is burnt toast playing that poorly.

Kolb didn't lose this game. McDermott lost this game. Two weeks in a row one receiver is the other teams offense. Last week White kept burning Hobbs and this week it was Britt. Why wouldn't McDermott change the coverage? This team needs a enemma starting with Joe Banner, Howie, Andy and several players.

We shut down the run...check. collins- slow old man...1st three quarters we blitzed and this guy did nothing...why did mcdermott not stick with this game plan? once collins had time, he threw it up (in most cases not accurately) and our secondary was exposed.

Having a coaching staff stick around for a long time (titans are similar) means a positive with respect to the system being more consistent. However, this produces an false belief that the system is not flawed. But it is....there still is poor time management, lack of discipline (penalties-how about juqua giving the titans 7 and missed assignments), poor play calling and game planning (luck is important and so is great individual efforts from time to time-vick, cooper's catch, etc) and the list goes on.

Another reason we believe the eagles are not bad is the rest of the NFC is not that good..the eagles are in the hunt...but this just masks the bigger problem - coaching, and the answer is reid must go

I never said McNabb played well...he didn't. In fact, this was his worst game as a Redskin. All I said was the reveivers dropped 6 key passes that would most likely have led to points and kept Chicago out of it for good. Dmac looked frustrated out there. I expect him to bounce back, though.

Speed kills and so does youth. A vastly more experienced team will not uncharacteristically self destruct like this, however, these guys did. The Eagles will get into the playoffs and if they are able to play error free, intene football from start to finish, they'll go far. Damn, that youth thing comes up, again.

I always laugh when I hear someone say "Philly fans are knowledgeable" Obviously anyone who has said that never bothered to read their comments.

This loss was not Kolbs fault. I do think Michael Vick would have won this game, but they had the game in hand and the coaching staff gave it away.

I'm glad Kolb's inability to throw deep got exposed, but he shouldn't have had to. There is absolutely no excuse for not trying to cover Kenny Britt after it became obvious that Hobbs couldn't do it.

The Eagles are better than I thought, but I'm sure it hurt their confidence to learn that no matter what happens to their defense no adjustments will ever be made.
