Bob Ford: Sloppy play is putting NFC East in a muddle

Midway through the third quarter last night, when the Eagles lined up for what should have been a simple quarterback sneak on fourth and inches, they tried to outsmart the Dallas Cowboys instead of merely settling for beating them.

You know what happened next. Instead of drawing the Cowboys offside with a stutter count, someone on the offensive line flinched as the Dallas defenders danced in and out. What should have been easy turned into a 5-yard penalty, and what should have been a first down turned into a punt.

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips slaps hands with tight end Jason Witten after a key fourth-quarter first down.

It was sometime around then - or maybe when the Cowboys did absolutely nothing with the momentum-changing opportunity handed them by the Eagles - that you had to wonder whatever happened to the NFC East.

This was such a proud division not that long ago. At the start of the regular season, the division had what were considered three legitimate contenders in the Eagles, Giants, and Cowboys, and, of course, the Washington Redskins as The Beaver.

Still, it was pretty good. Three legitimate quarterbacks, three credible defenses, three teams with great histories and high expectations.

Yesterday was not a good day for the division. The Giants coughed up a dreadful loss at home against the Chargers, their fourth straight defeat; the Redskins continued their systematic withdrawal from the NFL; and then the Eagles and Cowboys played a sloppy, uninspiring game that wouldn't have been worthy of also-rans, let alone contenders. In fact, it was a stinker.

The national prime-time audience was treated to an array of penalties, poor throws, bad tackles, dumb play-calling, and - this wasn't the fault of the teams - lousy officiating. Andy Reid likes to trot out the aphorism that a team is never as good as it looks when it wins or as bad as it looks when it loses. The Eagles had better hope that's true. They looked awful in the 20-16 loss to a team that could barely get out of its own way.

As if to prove that having a false start and then a punt on what should have been a simple quarterback sneak isn't so bad, the Eagles went to the line with the same situation in the fourth quarter, didn't mess around with the snap count, but also didn't gain the inches necessary for the first down.

Reid burned his final timeout of the half challenging the spot - which did appear miserly - but the Cowboys got the ball in good field position, anyway. Dallas committed the obligatory holding penalty just out of habit and put themselves in a tough spot, but Tony Romo threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Miles Austin on a third-and-14 play that gave the Cowboys the lead, 20-13, and ultimately the game.

The refs didn't help the Eagles on the spot, but if you put the officials in a position where they can beat you, that's bad football. Reid wouldn't comment on the officiating, but said he thought it was a representative game, all in all.

"We battled our tails off," Reid said. "It was two heavyweights swinging at each other, a tough, hard-fought game."

That might be how he saw it, but the two teams combined for three turnovers, 11-for-27 third-down efficiency, and more than 150 penalty yards. These teams looked like welterweights at best.

It has been difficult all season to figure out how good the Eagles might be. Until last week, when they thumped the Giants, their only meeting with a legitimate opponent had ended in a loud defeat against the New Orleans Saints. They also managed to lose to the Oakland Raiders along the way, which is the textbook definition of being unpredictable.

The Cowboys split their first four games, losing to the Giants and the Denver Broncos, and have now won four straight. The Giants, meanwhile, won their first five games, have lost their last four, and head into their bye on fumes.

The question is whether these are three very good teams taking turns pounding each other, or whether these are three inconsistent teams that show up sometimes and not others. Watch a game like last night's and it's tempting to say the latter. Apologists and head coaches will tell you that tackle football is a messy business and that motivated opponents can make any team look sloppy. There's some truth there, too, but it doesn't account for stupid penalties and unimaginative play-calling. (And let's take a moment here to say, "Wooo-hoooo," for the Eagles' Wildcat package. That baby has set the league on its ear.)

Donovan McNabb had a poor night, throwing two interceptions, taking too many sacks, and completing barely half his passes. This doesn't all rest on him, however. Reid didn't stick with the run when it was working, and the secondary had a disappointing day. Bad tackling is almost expected back there now, but poor coverage can make even a slingshot artist like Romo look good.

The incredible part of it is that the East is probably still the best division in the NFC, although that's not saying much. Three teams are still above .500 in the East, and the South is the only other division that even has two winning teams.

Does that mean the East is a sleeping beast, just hanging around through the middle of the season before hitting its stride at the end? Maybe, but all day yesterday, and particularly last night, it just seemed to be sleeping.

It's time to stop clinging to past history and "perceived potential" and clean house/move on. This version of the Eagles will not make it back to the Super Bowl again. Or even to the playoffs perhaps unless the NFC really continues to stink it up this year. Start Kolb, for good, and get to work with some free agency. And while they're at it, a new coaching staff.

Bob, I don't see what's muddled. The Cowboys have won 4 straight. You mention the "11 for 27 on third down conversions", but failed to mention the Cowboys were 7 for 15 on third down. The Eagles have faced five teams with a winning record but have beaten just one (Giants). The last eight games have them facing two teams with a losing record and they will be home games. Philly has a tough stretch coming with only three home games remaining. The Giants have faced three teams with a winning record and have lost two of those games. Their last seven games will have them facing only two teams with losing records. The Cowboys have faced 4 teams with winning records and have won/lost two. They have three games remaining against teams with losing records and Romo is phenominal in November, but horrendous in December. The Redskins ???...I'll say no more. Final Standings ? Eagles 8-8 Giants 7-9 Cowboys 10-6 Redskins 3-13

I am glad to see that somebody has enough guts to say, "Mc Nabb had a poor night". He did not lead, he did not throw well, he ruined my Sunday night with bordom. Another loss coming next week in San Diego. Where the hell is Kolb? I am sure forgetting about him is good for his confidence, not!!!

Actually, I fell asleep watching during the second half. Apathy has set in. We are all so bone-weary of watching McNabb underperform that we have accepted his mediocrity. As Sen. Specter said this a.m., "When McNabb gets behind, he stays behind." He does not have the intangible quality that great quarterbacks have. As a result, he can't mount a memorable comeback. I can't even remember a time when the Eagles were down by a touchdown or more in the 4th quarter, and McNabb willed the team to a comeback win. I certainly can remember the gopher balls he throws at the receivers' feet when the pressure mounts, but I can't recall any heroic drives. McNabb is Pat Burrell. Pat the Bat hit all his HRs and RBIs when the team was either so far ahead that it didn't count, or so far behind that it didn't matter. McNabb isn't going to take us anywhere, and after this season, it's time to move on.

I'm still as much a Giants fan as Eagles, but you're right. Where once you could expect three leigimately good teams from the division, Dallas now appears to be the best of a group that is imploding. The Runts are a disgrace, and as you said, the Eagles have been difficult to peg all season. Funny thing about officiating. Most times, bad officiating - while never excusable or unimportant - hurts mediocre and poor teams more than good ones. Funny how that is. Usually, the team that deserved to win - or did the least to deserve to lose - does.

Why did we go for the field goal again???--we thought are defense could hold them-we only held there offense in the red zone that was it--plus our defense was tired--blitzing almost every down because we can't pressure a qb unless we blitz-and romo stayed in the shotgun postion-acutally-romo looked like the season qb-with all the check down--does mcnabb even call audibles?

I guess I was watching a different game. I thought it was a very hard fought, entertaining game. Donovan didn't play his best game but he played pretty damn good. McNabb is the best QB we have ever had and probably the best we will ever have. Kolb is good and I am looking forward to seeing him play but McNabb is not done. I just hope he wins a SB at the end he deserves it for putting up with all of the so called "fans" harassment. Niceguy19125 what do you think is going on this year? Look at all the new people they have starting for them. This is a rebuilding year; it just doesn't feel like one because they are still playing at a fairly high level. Yes it was sloppy at times but that’s only because we have so many new people on the field.

No mention of two awful penalties by # 53....what a stiff. He could well have cost us the game.....can him and Reid, TODAY! The also SUCKS list should include: Stacy Andrews and Winston Justice!

McNubb Chokes
Sloppy play? Maybe. Good defensive game? More likely. Put pressure on McNubb, and he throws interceptions. The refs were making bad calls on both sides of the ball, so you iggle fans can make all the excuses you want, but you still lost. At home. It will be a long week for you, only to get spanked again.

Kidbad, Niceguy19125: My sentiments exactly. I'm of the mind where I sincerely believe had Kolb been behind center, the Eagles would have won. McNabb simply will not get this team to the Super Bowl anytime in our lifetime.Once again, we get to withness his infamous hi-lo and underthrown balls that contribute to the demise of this team. Although I concede the loss can not be attributed ENTIRELY to McNabb, his contributions, as aforementioned, where quite prevalent in the loss. At this rate, not only will this team as presntly constituted NOT see the Super Bowl but, we may eventually lose Kolb to some other team who will (with our luck) go on to win a Super Bowl with him. It is painfully obvious, farside37, that McNabb is no Drew Brees. Phillyboymike7 I really believe McNabb is incapable of calling audibles or adjusting on the fly, as is Reid. This team stinks and will continue to do so until there is a regime change.

The Eagles are so boring. I fell asleep before halftime. While I think McNabb is too harshly judged and has been a very good quarterback for the Eagles, this whole up and down thing is getting old. We need something new, but maybe a new coach would be better than a new quarterback. Neither will happen this year so I guess we'll wait for pitchers and catchers to report.

The Eagles do this year in and year out. Good wins against crappy teams, crappy loss against crappy team. Good win vs good team. Lose a few in a row, wins towards the end of the schedule, only to fall flat and disappoint in the end. Enough already, I am beginning to care less about the Birds.
