Rick O'Brien: Zuzek's switch-up powered West Catholic win

Some of West Catholic's supporters might not have been breaking out in a sweat over Bok's 7-0 halftime lead in Saturday's PIAA District 1-12 Class AA Subregional championship game, but Jake Zuzek clearly saw the possible end to West Catholic's season and his high school playing career.

"I was actually scared," said Zuzek, a standout two-way lineman for the Burrs. "If we had lost and didn't get to the state championship game, our season would have been a total failure."

With Zuzek moving from guard to center in the second half, West's running attack rebounded from a miserable start that was largely attributable to Bok's rock-solid play along the defensive line, and the Burrs downed the pesky Wildcats, 21-7.

"Their defensive linemen were pretty quick," Zuzek said. "After halftime, we buckled down and got things going."

The Burrs were held to 35 first-half rushing yards. Over the final 24 minutes, junior tailback Brandon Hollomon (28 carries for 177 yards) and company netted 167 rushing yards on 24 attempts vs. a worn-down Bok defense.

West Catholic coach Brian Fluck made personnel moves at intermission. The second-half offensive line was made up of Zuzek at center, guards Marcus Burwell and John Ruppert, tackles Rodney Linder and Erik Harper, and tight end Jim Lynch. Also, Bill Tobin stepped in as the No. 1 fullback.

Ruppert, a starter at defensive tackle, took over at right guard. Of switching from guard to center, the 6-foot-3, 290-pound Zuzek said, "That's the position I played full-time last year, so it's not a problem."

On defense, Zuzek, alternating between tackle and end, notched three tackles, including two solo stops.

West Catholic (10-2) will take on District 2 champion Dunmore (12-0) in the first round of the Class AA state tournament. The matchup is set for Friday at 7 p.m. at Palisades High in Kintnersville. Last season, the Burrs eliminated Dunmore, 49-21, in the quarterfinals.

Zuzek, who has bench-pressed 405 pounds and squatted 550, is hearing from Villanova, Hofstra and New Hampshire.

Today, the 18-year-old from Brookhaven, Delaware County, is scheduled to take an official visit to the Naval Academy. "It would be a hard transition, but it would also be a great opportunity," he said.

Campbell to Northwestern? Chestnut Hill Academy's Ibraheim Campbell, a standout running back and cornerback, is leaning heavily toward choosing Northwestern as his college destination.

The 6-foot, 195-pounder, who rushed for nearly 1,900 yards and 28 TDs for the 9-1 Blue Devils, opted against taking an official visit to Stanford over the weekend.

Campbell is expected to make an oral commitment this week. The finalists are, in order, Northwestern, Boston College and Stanford. He took official visits to the first two.

At the next level, Campbell, the Inter-Academic League's most valuable player, is projected to play defensive back and, possibly, return kicks.

High-scoring affair. Downingtown East outlasted Penncrest, 49-48, Saturday night in a thrilling, to say the least, District 1 Class AAAA quarterfinal. The difference, with no time remaining, was Trey Lauletta's 30-yard TD pass to Tyler Kroft and a two-point conversion run by Drew Harris.

Of the gutsy decision to go for two, Downingtown East coach Mike Matta said, "Quite frankly, I was about tired of that game. And Harris had said to me beforehand, 'Coach, give me the ball and I guarantee you that I'll score.' "

Harris, a sophomore workhorse who netted 209 yards and five TDs on 39 carries, reached paydirt, with the help of a huge second effort, on a fullback trap.

Thanks, ref. In the second quarter of the West Catholic-Bok game, Bok's Kevin Thompson slightly knocked into West punter Mike Grogan following his kick. Head referee Bill McKeever swallowed his whistle and an appreciative Thompson, smiling, tried to "slap five" McKeever. The veteran ref offered no return slap.

Extra points. Saturday's District 12 Class AAAA final between La Salle and George Washington will be televised live on 6ABC. . . . St. Joseph's Prep fullback/linebacker Mike Labor returned twice from left- and right-ankle injuries in Friday's Catholic League AAAA championship loss to La Salle. After being carried off the field midway through the third quarter, he courageously came back and finished on defense. (Steve O'Hara filled in at fullback.) Treated Saturday at Bryn Mawr Hospital, Labor's diagnosis: bilateral ankle sprains. . . . La Salle (three) and the Prep (four) combined for seven turnovers. . . . In the loss to West Catholic, the leaders of Bok's 5-2 defense, coordinated by Vince Trombetta, were ends Chris Sherrod (10 tackles, including seven solos and a second-quarter sack, as well as a pass deflection) and Jacqual Dobbs (six tackles, including five solos, second-quarter sack), and safety Robert Quarterman (eight tackles, including six solos, pass break-up). . . . Downingtown East's Taj Alexander, a 6-6, 275-pound defensive tackle, could be offered a scholarship when he visits Rutgers coach Greg Schiano today.
