Villanova drops one spot in poll

With a last-second loss to Connecticut and a win at No. 3 Syracuse, Villanova dropped one spot in the Associated Press poll to No. 8.

The Wildcats are one of four Big East teams in the Top 10. Pittsburgh jumped to No. 2, and received one first-place vote. UConn moved up three spots from eighth to fifth. Syracuse dropped into a tie with BYU for ninth after losses to Pitt and Villanova. The Orange has been No. 3.

Ohio State (20-0) was the overwhelmingly choice at No. 1 with 63 of the 65 first-place votes. Third-ranked Duke also received a first-place vote.

San Diego State, the other unbeaten at 20-0 was fourth, up from sixth.


Also, Villanova senior guard Corey Fisher was named the Big 5 Men’s Player of the Week.

Fisher averaged 22 points and 6.5 assists per game in a loss to UConn and a win over Syracuse.

He scored 28 points and had six assists in a last-second loss at Connecticut, with 16 points and sevent in a road victory at Syracuse.

Temple junior guard Shea Peddy and Penn freshman forward Alyssa Baron (Fr. G) were Big 5 Women’s Co-Players of the Week.

Peddy led the Owls to a 2-0 week, scoring a game-high 19 points and five steals in a 53-43 Atlantic 10 win over Saint Joseph’s. She followed that up with 20 points, 3 steals, and game-highs in assists (6) and rebounds (8) in a 62-55 Big 5 win over Penn.

Baron averaged 20 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals per game against two Big 5 opponents. Baron had a game-high 17 points, including the game-winning free throws against La Salle. Baron nearly single-handedly led the Quakers over first-place Temple as she tied a career high with 23 points and set career highs with five assists and three steals, while collecting four rebounds.

Men’s Honor Roll

* Aaric Murray (So. C), La Salle: Scored the eventual game-winner in the Explorers’ 76-75 win over Rhode Island. He had 20 points in the game to go along with 4 rebounds.

* Khalif Wyatt (So. G), Temple: Averaged 23 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game in a 1-1 week for the Owls. He scored a career-high 27 points and had 5 steals while hitting 9-13 from the floor in a win over Penn. He followed that with 19 points in 17 minutes against Xavier.

* Tyler Beranardini (Sr. F), Penn: Scored a career-high 27 points—14 in the first half, 13 in the second—and also had season highs with five three-point baskets and three steals in a Big 5 win over Saint Joseph’s. He also had three rebounds in the game. Earlier in the week, against Temple, Bernardini led Penn in scoring with 17 points and added five boards, two assists and two steals.

Women’s Honor Roll

* Kelly Cavallo (Jr. F), Saint Joseph’s: Averaged a double-double in a 1-1 week for the Hawks. She averaged 13 points and 12 rebounds per game and shot 52.6 percent from the floor on the week.

* Ashley Gale (Sr. G), La Salle: Averaged 15 points and 3.5 assists on the week while playing 39 minutes per game.
