VILLANOVA'S football team, which will have most everyone back from an 8-4 team that made the FCS playoffs and is expected to be ranked in the top 10 to start the season, will open on Friday night, Aug. 30, at Boston College. The Eagles have a new coach in Steve Addazio, who of course beat the Wildcats in the last two Mayor's Cup season openers while he was at Temple.

It will be the first meeting between the teams since 1980, the last season Villanova played at the Division I-A level before dropping the sport for 4 years. The Wildcats were supposed to play Pittsburgh, but there were issues on the Panthers' end. So they ended up with BC, another ACC team.

The Wildcats will be at Fordham on Sept. 7 before getting the first of two byes. Then they play three straight home games: against Stony Brook, the CAA newcomer and the team that beat them in the playoffs; Penn and William & Mary. Then they'll play four of their next five on the road, starting with Towson on Oct. 12. They also go to New Hampshire, James Madison and Rhode Island, sandwiched around a visit from Maine on Oct. 26. They get a week off before the traditional regular-season finale, Nov. 23 vs. Delaware.
