Sources: 'Nova could land guard

POSTED: Tuesday, July 31, 2012, 4:42 PM

While nothing is official yet, it appears that Villanova could be getting close to adding another basketball player to its roster.

Sources familiar with the situation have indicated that 6-4 guard Mislav Brzoja, of Croatia, could be joining the Wildcats by the time classes start late next month.

He would be eligible to play immediately.

Brzoja, who attended Traders Point Christian in Whitestown, Ind., last year, had committed to Northwestern. But he was denied admission, after reportedly having a 4.0 grade-point average at TPC. For a while it seemed like he might be headed to Dayton, but now Villanova looks like the favorite.

The 6-4, 210-pounder, who’s listed as a 3-star prospect by Scout, has been described as a “shooting specialist.” Sources have said he can also play the point as well as small forward. The main concern at the moment seems to be whether or not he’ll be offered a contract to play professionally back home. He was a member of the Croatian team that beat the United States in the under-19 European championships.

The Wildcats, who went 14-19 last season to tie a school record for losses and miss the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004, have lost three players since it ended. Seniors Maalik Wayns, who just signed with the Sixers as a free agent, and Dominic Cheek left for the NBA draft, while sophomore Markus Kennedy transferred to Southern Methodist (where he’ll play for Larry Brown). In addition to freshmen Ryan Arcidiacono, a guard, and Daniel Ochefu, a forward. In addition, transfer Tony Chennault, from Wake Forest, is eligible right away after receiving a hardship waiver from the NCAA. And Dylan Ennis, another transfer guard from Rice, will be eligible in 2013. He’ll have three years left.

It looks as though the Wildcats of Villanova may benefit from the Wildcats of Northwestern having higher academic standards. Dayton probably would have accepted Brzoja, but they filled their roster. Could be a big break for Villanova.

You are, of course, aware that he was a straight A student in High School, right?
