John Robertson's knee injury ends career at Villanova

The college career of Villanova quarterback John Robertson is over. Robertson will not have surgery to repair a torn posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The college career of Villanova quarterback John Robertson is over.

Robertson will not have surgery to repair a torn posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. However, the fifth-year senior, who was hurt Sept. 19 in a victory against Delaware, will require a six-month rehabilitation that will force him to miss the team's remaining seven games.

"No, he is not able to come back," Villanova coach Andy Talley said Monday. "He has a torn PCL, and they really feel that it is non-surgical at this point and that it's best that they don't operate. They feel he can rehab it. But it's going to be a good six-month rehab in order for him to be available for pro tryouts.

"We're good with that," Talley added. "He's had a phenomenal career. He's almost a legendary quarterback. It's just a shame he didn't have a chance to put it back together again for one more year. But he left his name on the sands of time at Villanova, that is for sure."

Robertson won the Walter Payton Award as the top offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision last season. He is the school's career leader in total offense (10,933 - 7,290 passing and 3,643 rushing). His rushing yards rank second in school history; his passing yards rank fourth.

In search of a second opinion, Robertson traveled to Gulf Breeze, Fla., over the weekend and had his knee examined by surgeon James Andrews.

Villanova (2-2, 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association) will go with freshman Zach Bednarczyk for the rest of the season. The 15th-ranked Wildcats will play host to William and Mary (2-2, 1-1) on Saturday.

In three games this season, Robertson completed 43 of 74 passes for 522 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed 50 times for 138 yards and three scores.

Robertson is second in school history in career scoring (290 points) and 100-yard rushing games (15).
