Villanova QB John Robertson sidelined

The Wildcats star will forgo knee surgery with possibility of returning this season.

VILLANOVA quarterback John Robertson, who won the Walter Payton Award last season as the outstanding offensive player in FCS, will be out indefinitely with the injury to his right knee he suffered in the fourth quarter of Saturday's 28-21 win against Delaware.

Robertson, a fifth-year senior, suffered a torn posterior cruciate ligament. He opted not to undergo surgery at this time. If the rehab is successful, he could return late in the regular season.

He is 43-for-74 for 522 yards and three touchdowns this season. He also has 50 carries for 138 yards and three scores.

The Wildcats (2-1, 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association) are ranked fifth. They host Penn (0-1) tomorrow night. Then they get their only bye before hosting William & Mary (1-1, 0-0) on Oct. 10.

Redshirt freshman Zach Bednarczyk will make his first start against the Quakers. On his second play against the Blue Hens, he threw a 6-yard scoring pass on fourth-and-4. On Villanova's next possession, he moved the team 74 yards in six plays and scrambled for the go-ahead 21-yard TD run on his only carry. He finished 4-for-6 for 57 yards.
