Villanova's Robertson playing a high level

When John Robertson needed shoulder surgery in the offseason, it allowed him to spend some time on the sidelines last spring and watch his Villanova teammates closer than ever before.

"I got a different perspective," Robertson said. "I was pretty much able to watch the offense from the outside. I saw so many different things that I hadn't seen playing. I was like, 'alright, this is what I have to do.' "

Whatever it was that Robinson saw, it's paying dividends. Set to lead the fifth-ranked Wildcats (6-1) against visiting Morgan State (4-3) on Saturday, Robertson is playing the best football of his career. He was named the Colonial Athletic Association's offensive player of the week for the third consecutive week and for the fifth time this season after his late-game heroics helped carry Villanova to its sixth straight win.

Robertson nailed down his latest honor last week at William and Mary. With the Wildcats trailing, 31-28, late in the game, Robertson led the Wildcats on a 69-yard, game-winning drive with no timeouts in the waning minutes, throwing a game-winning touchdown pass to Kevin Gulyas with 52 seconds left.

"He's playing at the very highest level of any quarterback that we've ever had week in and week out," said Andy Talley, in his 30th season as the Wildcats coach.

Robertson ranks in the top five in five different Football Championship Subdivision statistical categories. This season, he has completed 119 of 172 passes for 1,723 yards with 22 touchdowns and one interception. He's also rushed for 422 yards and three scores on 111 carries.

He's one reason why Villanova has won six straight games, its longest winning streak since the Wildcats closed their 2009 national championship season with nine straight wins. They've outscored their last six opponents by 260-116. They lead the CAA in scoring (40.9 points per game), which ranks eighth in the FCS.

Robertson doesn't expect a letdown against Morgan State on Saturday.

"We have some expectations," Robertson said. "We're taking it day by day and not taking anything for granted."
