Villanova gets commitment from Montrose Christian forward

When your school has been to the Sweet 16 (and beyond) 3 of the last 4 years, you get in with some really good players. Villanova just got a commitment from a really good player, 6-8 forward Isaiah Armwood from Montrose Christian, in Rockville, Md. Armwood joins Roman Catholic's terrific point guard Maalik Wayns as the first members of 'Nova's class of 2009.

"He was a freshman on our team when Kevin Durant was a senior,'' said Montrose Christian coach Stu Vetter. "He is a terrific athlete.''

That Montrose squad was the only team to beat Oak Hill with Michael Beasley and Ty Lawson.

According to Vetter, Armwood was getting offers from everywhere. His final three were Texas, Syracuse and Villanova. The rankings lists vary, but a consensus would be that Armwood is a top-50 player, a very good get.

Vetter credited Villanova coach Jay Wright and assistant Patrick Chambers with establishing a relationship early with Armwood.

"They had been recruiting him for a year,'' Vetter said.

Villanova might not be finished with Montrose Christian players. According to Vetter, Villanova is a finalist for forward Terrell Vinson, also a very highly rated player.

"Isaiah is more athletic,'' Vetter said. "Terrell is a little more finesse and a little more fundamental.''

Duke, Georgetown, Memphis and Maryland are also in with Vinson.

"Villanova's right there,'' Vetter said.

If Villanova ends up with just Wayns and Armwood, it is a very good recruiting year. Wayns also is a top-50 talent and one of the best point guards among rising seniors. *
