Villanova's Curtis advances to 5,000-meter final at NCAA Track and Field Championships

Bobby Curtis entered as the 22nd seed for the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Track and Field Championships at Drake University, but the Villanova junior is the top runner heading into tomorrow's final after his time of 14 minutes, 10.24 seconds bested the closest competitor by almost 20 seconds (14:29.38) last night.

West Catholic alum and UCLA sprinter Nicole Leach took first in the 400-meter hurdles in 56.75. Penn middle distance runner Jesse Carlin qualified for tomorrow's 800-meter finale, finishing 11th with a time of 2:07.42. Frances Koons of Villanova qualified for the 5,000 meter finals (17:23.33); teammate Liz Haglund finished 14th and qualified in the steeplechase (10:25.48). Former William Penn standout Juanita Broaddus (LSU) took eighth in the 100 semifinals (11.56) to qualify for the finals, while LSU teammate and West Catholic alum La Tavia Thomas qualified for the finals with a fourth-place finish of 2:08.51. *
