Larry Knight to be named Temple's outside linebackers coach

Temple coach Geoff Collins brought in a new outside linebackers coach on Sunday.

Larry Knight, who last month was named Temple’s director of player personnel, will be hired as the Owls outside linebackers coach, according to a source.

Knight will take the spot of cornerbacks coach Cory Robinson who is expected to be hired at Rutgers.

According to the source, Nate Burton, who was recently hired as Temple’s new safeties coach, will now be coach all of the defensive backs.

Temple’s Geoff Collins, entering his second year, has a strong defensive background and will assist Burton with the defensive backs.

Knight joined the Temple football staff in February 2017 as quality control coach for defense and recruiting. In that role, he worked with the defensive staff breaking down film as well as assisting with the program’s recruiting efforts. Last month he was elevated to the position of director of player personnel.

He will still be the recruiting coordinator for defensive players according to the source.

Having Knight working with the linebackers will free Andrew Thacker to concentrate more on his new defensive coordinator duties. Thacker, last year’s linebackers coach, was promoted to defensive coordinator/linebackers coach last month.

Robinson will be the second coach to leave within the last month. Taver Johnson, last year’s defensive coordinator, who was named assistant head coach defense/co-defensive coordinator/safeties, when Thacker was named defensive coordinator last month, recently left to become a cornerbacks coach at Ohio State.

Knight is a 2010 graduate of Central Michigan, where he was a four-year letter winner as a defensive end.

Before coming to Temple he was outside linebackers coach at Georgia State in 2015-16, a defensive quality coach at Tennessee (2013-14) and a graduate assistant at Cincinnati in 2012.
