Matthews leads Temple to golf win

Led by individual champion Brandon Matthews, Temple captured the Temple Invitational on Sunday at Philmont Country Club in Huntingdon Valley.

Led by individual champion Brandon Matthews, Temple captured the Temple Invitational on Sunday at Philmont Country Club in Huntingdon Valley.

Matthews fired his second consecutive 1-under-par 69 for a 36-hole score of 138 and a 3-stroke victory over Joseph Leavitt of Rhode Island.

The Owls had three other players - Patrick Ross (74-146), Calvary Christian graduate Mark Farley (71-147), and Hatboro-Horsham alum Matt Teesdale (77-147) - in the top 10 in posting an 18-shot win over Hartford. Drexel finished third and Penn placed fourth, with the Dragons' Christopher Crawford taking third place in the individual competition at 143.

Field hockey. Amber Youtz scored a hat trick to lead 15th-ranked Temple to a 5-1 win over visiting La Salle. Youtz has seven career hat tricks, and has done so for a second time in back-to-back games.

Alyssa Delp and Katie Foran also scored for the Owls (10-4).

Eileen Dzwill (Bishop Eustace) scored her first career goal for La Salle (6-6).

Maryland 9, Penn 0 - The second-ranked Terrapins (11-2) rolled past the visiting Quakers (4-6). Moira Putsch (Academy of Notre Dame) was among eight players who scored in Maryland's sixth consecutive win.

Northeastern 2, Drexel 1 - The Dragons (7-6, 0-2 Colonial Athletic Association) battled into overtime before falling to the visiting No. 16 Huskies (11-2, 2-0).
